10 Animals Abandoned at Winnipeg Humane Society

On Saturday morning, June 8, 2024, Winnipeg Humane Society staff found 10 abandoned animals outside their shelter. The animals included a dog tied to a tree, six rats in a box, and a mother cat with two kittens. The WHS stated this in their social media post.

While the owners likely intended to help, abandoning pets overnight puts them at risk. The shelter urges pet owners to seek help during business hours to ensure the animals' safety.

None of the pets are available for adoption yet, but we will keep you updated when they are.

Winnipeg Transit to Replace Peggo Cards

Exciting news for Winnipeg commuters! According to an article written by Tessa Adamski at CBC News, Winnipeg Transit is gearing up to replace its Peggo card system with modern payment options. Kirk Cumming, Winnipeg Transit's IT manager said the new system could feature credit and debit card payments and mobile phone apps.

Kyle Owens of Functional Transit Winnipeg emphasized that the new system must consider all riders, including those with limited payment options, to ensure accessibility for everyone.

Winnipeggers can expect to hear more about the recommended technology later this year.

City Faces Budget Deficit Challenge

The City of Winnipeg’s latest financial report shows a $39.3 million deficit in the tax-supported operating budget for the first quarter of 2024. Higher costs in Public Works, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services, and Winnipeg Police Service are the main culprits.

Councillor Jeff Browaty mentioned that city departments must adjust to address these shortfalls. A mitigation plan will be discussed at the next committee meeting on July 5. Stay tuned for more updates!
