National Indigenous Peoples Day Events!

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honor Indigenous history, culture, and resilience across Manitoba and Canada.

As reported by Charles Lefebvre of CTV News, here’s what’s happening in Winnipeg:

  • Wa-Say Healing Centre at The Forks:

    • Powwow from noon to 5 p.m.

    • Concert from 5 to 9 p.m. featuring Ivan Flett Memorial Dancers, Gator Beaulieu, and JC Campbell.

    • Free event.

  • Manitoba Children’s Museum:

    • Activities from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    • Art projects, teepee building, storytime, drumming, dance performances, and Inuit artifacts display.

  • Circles for Reconciliation at Sgt. Tommy Prince Place (90 Sinclair Street):

    • Community barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

    • Sharing circle and entertainment.

Winnipeg Jets Hire New Coaches

The Winnipeg Jets have added Davis Payne and Dean Chynoweth to their coaching staff for the 2024-25 season. This move follows Scott Arniel’s promotion to head coach and the departure of assistant coach Brad Lauer.

Payne, who previously coached with the Ottawa Senators, will handle the forwards, while Chynoweth, formerly with the Toronto Maple Leafs, will oversee the defense.

Sea Bears Release MVP Teddy Allen

The Winnipeg Sea Bears have released star player Teddy Allen, the 2023 Canadian Elite Basketball League MVP. The decision was made due to behavior that caused internal unrest, according to head coach Mike Taylor.

Despite his impressive stats, Allen's actions on and off the court were disruptive to the team’s dynamics.

St. Boniface Hospital Receives Record Donation

As reported by the Winnipeg Sun, the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation received a historic $10 million donation from the late Miriam Bergen, a respected local business leader.
