Prime Minister Trudeau's Surprise Visit at Folklorama

Source: Punjab Pavilion

As reported by CBC News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a surprise stop at Winnipeg's annual Folklorama festival this week!

On Monday night, he surprised attendees at the Pearl of the Orient Philippine pavilion, along with a few others like the Punjab Pavilion. Guests were thrilled to take selfies and shake hands with the Prime Minister, who even enjoyed some egg rolls!

Ruth Provitina, who knew about the visit in advance, managed to keep it a secret until Trudeau arrived. “He has so many fans here,” said Maridol Madolora, amazed at the crowd’s excitement.

Folklorama, the world's longest-running multicultural festival, kicked off on Sunday and runs until August 17, featuring 38 vibrant pavilions. Trudeau’s visit comes just ahead of the Elmwood-Transcona federal byelection on September 16, adding a touch of political excitement to the festivities.

The Winnipeg Humane Society has taken in over 130 small dogs after a large rescue operation. They’re asking for our help! Donations are needed to cover medical care, food, and additional staffing.

While they're not accepting foster or adoption applications for these dogs just yet, you can still support by holding onto strays or donating. Let’s come together to support these animals and our community. Check out their website for updates and how you can help.

Ghana Pavilion Debuts at Folklorama

As reported by CTV News, Winnipeg's Ghanaian community is hosting its very first pavilion at Folklorama, bringing West African culture to the forefront.

Abigail Larson, the pavilion coordinator, encourages other cultural groups to showcase their traditions too. "We decided to start our own pavilion because our community is growing, and we want to share more of our culture," she said.

If your community isn't yet part of Folklorama, consider setting up a pavilion to share your heritage. The Ghana Pavilion runs from August 4 to 10 at 340 Provencher Boulevard, with shows at 6:45 p.m., 8:15 p.m., and 9:45 p.m. Tickets are just $7.50 each. Celebrate diversity and support our local cultural showcases!

Hindu Community's Colorful Chariot Procession

As reported by Winnipeg Free Press, the Hindu community celebrated the Festival of Chariots with a vibrant procession on St. Anne’s Road. Hundreds of devotees, led by dancers, pulled a beautifully decorated chariot in a lively display of faith and culture. This was the first time such a large chariot paraded through Winnipeg streets.

The event brought together the community, promoting peace and unity. If you missed it, look out for future celebrations to join in the festivities and experience the rich cultural heritage.
