New Affordable Housing for Winnipeg Families

Fifteen families in Transcona just received the keys to their brand-new homes, thanks to Habitat for Humanity Manitoba. These homes are part of a larger project to build 55 affordable homes by 2026, offering a real opportunity for families to own a place of their own.

What’s even better? These homes are energy-efficient and carbon-free, which means they're good for both the families and the environment. With around 175 kids moving in, the area’s going to see a lot of new energy and excitement.

This whole thing is funded through a unique system—families make mortgage payments, and along with donations from locals and businesses, Habitat can keep building more homes. It’s a huge win for Winnipeg, especially in a time when affordable housing is more important than ever. Families get a stable home, the community grows, and everyone benefits.

There’s something for everyone—player and coach interviews, interactive games, prizes, and food trucks (including the famous Jetdog for only $5!). It’s a full day of hockey fun, and the best part? It won’t cost you a dime.

Thousands of Students Gather for Truth and Reconciliation Week

Source: NCTR_UM

On September 18, around 7,000 Winnipeg students came together at Canada Life Centre for the Mino-pimatisiwin – The Good Life Youth Empowerment Gathering, kicking off Truth and Reconciliation Week.

As reported by CTV News, students from grades 8 to 12 heard from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis residential school survivors and community leaders. The event also featured live performances from cultural dancers and singer-songwriter Rebecca Strong, who won Canada’s Got Talent last year. It was a powerful moment for students to learn about Indigenous history and culture, making it a meaningful start to a week focused on understanding and reconciliation.

Manitoba's First Extended Hours Clinic Opens

Manitobans now have more flexible healthcare options! The province just opened its first Extended Hours Primary Care Clinic at Grace General Hospital, offering evening, weekend, and holiday appointments.

It’s a game-changer for busy families who struggle to book appointments during regular business hours. Premier Wab Kinew says it’s all about making healthcare more accessible, especially for working people. You can book same-day appointments online, or even try your luck with a walk-in spot!

Wawanesa Insurance Announces New CEO

After an impressive 35 years with Wawanesa Insurance, CEO Jeff Goy is retiring at the end of this year. Evan Johnston, who’s been with the company for eight years, will take over as CEO starting January 2025.

Wawanesa is a big player in the insurance world, and Goy’s leadership helped the company grow into one of Canada’s leading mutual insurers. Johnston, born and raised in Manitoba, is ready to carry the torch and keep Wawanesa thriving. It’s a big shift for the company, but with Jeff and Evan working together on the transition, the future looks bright for this Manitoba-based business.

Goldeyes Swept in Championship Run

It was a tough finish for the Winnipeg Goldeyes this year, as they were swept in the championship series by the Kane County Cougars. Despite the loss, Winnipeg showed up strong, packing Blue Cross Park and cheering until the final out. The Goldeyes played hard, but Kane County took the series 5-3, claiming the Miles Wolff Cup. Huge thanks to the Goldeyes for an exciting season—there’s always next year!
