A Summer Skill Your Kids Will Actually Use!

There's a certain look a kid gets when they hold up something they made with their own two hands.

Not bought, not handed to them. Made by them.

This July & August, Lilax Studio is giving Winnipeg kids the chance to feel exactly that.

Their Kids Sewing Camp runs over three days for ages 9 to 15, and by the end, even total beginners walk away with something they're proud to show off.

Here's what to know:

  • 3 sessions, 3 hours each, for 9 hours of hands-on instruction

  • Kids leave with a pillowcase, a tote bag, and more

  • All materials and sewing machines included

  • Capped at just 6 students so everyone gets real attention

At just $200, it's a small price for something they'll carry with them for life.

This is the kind of camp where a little curiosity turns into a skill they keep forever. Long after the summer tan fades, they'll still know how to make something from scratch.

With only six spots, this one fills fast. If your kid has ever wondered how clothes are made, now's the time.

Major Corydon Avenue Upgrades Are Now Underway

Source: Corydon Business Improvement Zone (BIZ)

If you drive, walk, or cycle along Corydon between Shaftesbury and Kenaston, you've probably already noticed the construction.

Work is officially underway on a $7.5 million renewal project that's going to make that stretch of road a lot better for pretty much everyone who uses it.

Here's what's coming:

  • Full repaving of all vehicle lanes between Tuxedo Avenue and Kenaston, and westbound lanes from Tuxedo to Shaftesbury

  • A brand new paved multi-use path running from Park Boulevard to Kenaston, connecting parks, schools, and Assiniboine Park

  • Upgraded Transit stops, curb bump-outs, and a new shelter for better accessibility

  • Sewer and water infrastructure upgrades underneath the road

The project is jointly funded by the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba, and the federal government. Work is expected to wrap up by late fall 2026.

And like most major construction projects, there will be some short-term inconvenience along the way.

But when it's finished, this stretch of Corydon will be safer and easier to use whether you're driving, cycling, walking, or catching a bus.

A Local Guide to Winnipeg's Most Loved Patios This Summer

Patio season has officially arrived, and after a long Winnipeg winter, it feels like the whole city is finally back outside.

So we put together a guide to some of the most loved patios in Winnipeg right now, from lively gathering spots and rooftops downtown to neighbourhood favourites that locals return to every summer.

A few local favourites from our list:

  • The Beer Can (1 Granite Way): String lights, two bars, local craft beer, and food by Kosmos Food Cantina. One of the best summer spots in the city, full stop

  • Le Patio 340 (340 Provencher Blvd): Live music, arts workshops, artisanal beer, and a bilingual St. Boniface atmosphere Thursday through Sunday

  • Amsterdam Tea Room (211 Bannatyne Ave): A hidden Exchange District gem with a gorgeous tree at the centre, boozy tea cocktails, and Dutch dishes

  • The Common at The Forks (1 Forks Market Rd): One of the largest licensed patios in Western Canada, with views of the Historic Port and food kiosks inside

And that's just a small sample of what's on the list.

Whether you're planning date night, catching up with friends, or simply hoping to find a new spot to enjoy the sunshine, there's something on the guide for everyone.

P.S. Share this with your group chat. It'll save somebody from asking, "Where should we go?" this weekend.

Construction Has Started on a New School and Child-Care Centre in Devonshire Park

For families in east Winnipeg, this is the kind of news worth sharing with the whole neighbourhood.

Construction has officially begun on a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Devonshire Park, located at 35 Private Davy Dr.

The school will have a core capacity of 800 students and is being built to serve a community that has seen significant growth in recent years.

Here's what families can expect:

  • Up to 800 students will be able to attend once the school is open

  • An integrated child-care centre with up to 134 spaces for infants, preschoolers, and school-aged children, all under one roof

  • Part of 11 new schools announced in the province's Budget 2025

  • Targeted opening date of September 2027, giving families time to plan ahead

  • The school is designed so kids currently being bused out of the neighbourhood can learn close to home

It's the kind of project that grows with a community and creates a place where future generations can learn, play, and belong.
