Local News

Wildfire Smoke and Heat to hit Winnipeg

Brace yourselves! Southern Manitoba is in for some hazy and hot days ahead. Wildfire smoke from Western Canada and northern Ontario is moving in, causing poor air quality and rising temperatures.

Environment Canada warns that the smoke will likely linger until the end of July, making it tough for those with respiratory issues. Expect smoky skies and the smell of smoke to increase. With temperatures soaring, it's a double whammy.

So please try to stay indoors if you can, keep those windows closed, and take care of your health during this smoky spell.

Goldeyes’ Pitcher Shines Again

Winnipeg Goldeyes' ace Joey Matulovich has been named the American Association’s pitcher of the week, again! Over his last two starts, Matulovich threw seven scoreless innings each time, boosting his record to an impressive 8-2. With league-leading stats in strikeouts and earned run average, he's a key player to watch.

As the league takes a break for All-Star festivities, Matulovich will be representing Winnipeg in Kansas City. Let's cheer on Joey and the Goldeyes as they continue their stellar season!

Fisher River Cree Nation Revives Rubin Block

Source: Manitoba Historical Society

As reported by CTV News, the Fisher River Cree Nation has purchased the historic but long-vacant Rubin Block in South Osborne. This landmark building, damaged by fire in 2014, is set to be transformed into a residential complex with 13 units ranging from one to four bedrooms.

The project, in partnership with the University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation, aims to rejuvenate the area and provide much-needed housing. Work to make the building safe is underway, with construction expected to start in the fall.

City Sells Osborne Village Parking Lot

As reported by CBC News, the City of Winnipeg is negotiating the sale of a parking lot at Osborne Street and Stradbrook Avenue. The lot, an eyesore for years, requires soil remediation before the sale can go through.

Once sold, this prime piece of real estate could see exciting new development, bringing more activity and possibly housing to Osborne Village. While some might miss the parking, the potential for revitalization and community growth is a win-win. Stay tuned for updates on what could be a fantastic transformation for this vibrant neighborhood!
