Canada's Federal Minimum Wage Is Going Up This Week
If you've been keeping an eye on the cost of living (and honestly, who hasn't), this one matters.
Starting April 1, the federal minimum wage is rising to $18.15 an hour, up from $17.75. We don't usually cover federal policy here at Winnipeg Digest, but this one has a direct impact on workers right here in our city.
Here's what to know:
The new rate kicks in on April 1, 2026
It applies to workers in federally regulated industries like banking, telecommunications, and interprovincial transportation
The increase is tied to inflation, based on last year's Consumer Price Index, which rose 2.1%
If Manitoba's provincial minimum wage is higher, employers are required to pay the higher amount
It's a small bump on paper, but for the people working those jobs, every bit helps. Especially when groceries, gas, and rent keep climbing.
And while no single raise fixes everything, it's a step in the right direction for thousands of workers across the country, including plenty right here in Winnipeg.
At the end of the day, fair pay is something we can all get behind.

Restaurant of the Week:
Commonwealth Kitchen & Bar

A Beloved Exchange District Spot Is Making Its Comeback
If you've been waiting for Commonwealth Kitchen & Bar to reopen, the wait is almost over.
The Exchange District favourite is getting ready to welcome guests again after being forced to close due to fire damage last year. And for anyone who's been before, you know this is the kind of spot that's hard to replace.
Tucked inside the historic Bank of Toronto building on Main Street, Commonwealth has one of the most beautiful dining rooms in the city. Tall ceilings, marble walls, warm lighting, and a mix of greenery hanging overhead that makes the whole space feel alive.
The menu is built around globally inspired sharing plates, and there's something for everyone. A few you should not miss:
The pulled brisket sliders (a fan favourite for a reason)
Chicken or chana masala
Motoyaki & fresh oysters
Truffle fries with parmesan and roasted garlic aioli
Reservations open April 8, so mark your calendar and bring a friend. This is the kind of local comeback worth showing up for.

City Updates
Winnipeg’s First Costco Business Centre Officially Opens

Source: Costco Wholesale
If you run a restaurant, manage an office, or operate any kind of business in Winnipeg, this one's for you.
Manitoba's first ever Costco Business Centre is now officially open at the former warehouse location on 1315 St. James Street.
The 137,000 square foot facility is a conversion of the original Costco Winnipeg, which recently moved to Portage Avenue West.
Here's what makes it different from a regular Costco:
More than 70% of the products are unique to the Business Centre, designed for restaurants, offices, convenience stores, and more
A full service Costco Pharmacy is on site
A 14,000 square foot cooler section for fresh and frozen products
Next day delivery service available across a designated zone in the city using a fleet of six trucks
The best part? It's open to all Costco members, not just businesses.
So even if you're not running a restaurant or stocking an office, you can still walk in and shop. The opening has also brought 190 new jobs to the area, which is a nice win for the local economy.
Hours are Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Whether you're curious about what a Business Centre actually looks like inside or just want to see what's different, it's worth checking out.

A few things worth noting:
Daily nonstop flights starting June 18
The Montreal Metropolitan Airport (MET) is a newly revamped terminal on Montreal's South Shore, about 15 km from downtown
It's part of Porter's biggest expansion yet, with 12 new routes launching from MET across Canada
Whether it's a long weekend getaway, a family trip, or just an excuse to eat your way through Montreal's food scene, this is a welcome addition for Winnipeg travellers.

Source: Assiniboine Park & Zoo
If you've been looking for a reason to get out and enjoy something beautiful this spring, The Leaf just gave you one.
The biomes are back open after a scheduled maintenance closure, and they've unveiled a brand new seasonal exhibit at the Babs Asper Display House.
It's called "Kaleidoscope of Spring," and it runs through June 7.
Here's what's inside:
Hundreds of blooming tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and allium
A large garden kaleidoscope, prisms, and glass installations that scatter light throughout the space
Interactive elements that highlight how plants use colour and light to attract pollinators
Admission is regular Leaf pricing, and the biomes are open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
It's the kind of thing you really have to see in person. Photos don't do it justice.
