Restaurant of the Week: Baraka Pita Bakery

Craving authentic Middle Eastern food? Baraka Pita Bakery has been serving up some of the best in Winnipeg for over 20 years. Located at 1783 Main St, this spot is all about fresh, homemade goodness—from their flavorful sauces to perfectly seasoned meats, everything is made in-house.

We swung by last week, and let’s just say, it’s a must-visit. Seriously, their food speaks for itself. So, if you haven’t been yet, make sure Baraka’s on your list!

City Updates

Portage Avenue East Closure: What You Need to Know

Starting November 12, Portage Avenue East will be closed for a week. Don’t worry, the annual Santa Claus Parade on November 16 is still on, and local access to places like the Fairmont Hotel is good via Lombard Street.

Why the closure? The city’s getting a head start on major intersection upgrades. We’re talking:

  • New traffic signals and streetlights.

  • Safer pedestrian crossings with curb extensions.

  • Fresh sidewalks and medians.

This work’s all part of a bigger plan to make downtown safer for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and walkers alike. By next June, things will be in top shape, just in time for the new Primary Transit Network launch on June 29.

New Thrift Store in Winnipeg!

Winnipeg’s newest thrift shop, Kavod, is open at 531 Notre Dame Ave! But this isn’t your typical second-hand store. As reported by The Winnipeg Sun, Kavod’s mission is to support the community by offering affordable clothes and essentials while running programs like:

  • Agency Days: Helping people shop for free through local agencies.

  • Comfort Backpacks: Providing kids in foster care with necessities and comfort items.

Whether you’re looking for great finds or want to donate gently used items, Kavod makes it easy to support a good cause. Swing by, grab a deal, and help make a difference in our community.

Changes for Manitoba Teacher Certification

Manitoba’s shaking things up for new teachers. Before, early and middle-year educators had to tackle extra credit hours in subjects like math, English, and social sciences—on top of their degree. Now? Those extra requirements are gone.

The goal is to make it easier for more people to step into teaching roles, especially with the province facing a growing need for educators. Some folks are concerned about math skills, but universities say their programs focus on teaching methods that keep quality education intact.

For Winnipeggers, this means more teachers in classrooms and fewer roadblocks for those passionate about shaping young minds.

Winnipeg Sports

Five straight trips to the Grey Cup—how’s that for dominance? The Bombers beat the Riders 38-22, punching their ticket to the big game yet again. With standout performances from Kenny Lawler and Zach Collaros, plus Brady Oliveira’s unstoppable ground game, we’ve got a team that’s firing on all cylinders.

The city is buzzing as the Bombers head to Hamilton to face the Argos on Nov 17th in a rematch of 2022 Grey Cup. Grab your jerseys and snacks—it’s time to cheer them on!

Winnipeg Jets Set Another NHL Record

The Winnipeg Jets are having one heck of a season, setting a new NHL record with 14 wins in their first 15 games! They clinched this historic record with a 4-1 win over the Stars on Saturday.

With a start like this, Winnipeggers can’t help but dream—could this be our year? It’s early, but the Jets are looking unstoppable. Let’s keep the momentum going!
