Winnipeg’s Plan 20-50 Gets Scarped

We usually try to stick to good news around here, but this is something important for all of us in Winnipeg to know.

Plan 20-50 was meant to be a roadmap for how Winnipeg and 17 surrounding municipalities would handle big things like roads, transit, and even wastewater treatment. The idea was simple: work together to tackle shared challenges, because let’s face it, these issues don’t stop at city limits.

But on Thursday, as reported by CBC News, the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region (WMR) decided to scrap it. Plan 20-50 is officially done.

Here’s what that means for us:

  • The plan wasn’t a hit with everyone. Some municipalities felt like it overstepped, with rules about neighborhood density and lot sizes that made them feel like they were losing control over their own areas.

  • It’s back to the drawing board. A new plan is expected by 2027, but until then, there’s a lot of uncertainty for communities and businesses that rely on coordinated planning.

  • Collaboration just got trickier. Some municipalities might even leave the WMR entirely, making it harder to tackle big projects like transit or infrastructure upgrades.

Mayor Gillingham has been vocal about the risks of not having a solid regional plan, warning that Winnipeg could fall behind cities like Calgary or Saskatoon when it comes to attracting growth and investment.

And honestly? That’s not good for anyone. Let’s hope the next plan gets everyone back on the same page—because whether it’s roads, transit, or big projects, we all benefit from working together.

Winnipeg Experiences You Can Gift This Holiday Season

Source: Thermea

Over the past few weeks, a bunch of you have asked us to put together a list of local experiences you can gift for the holidays. Honestly, it’s such a good idea—because giving someone a memory they’ll cherish? That’s way better than another pair of socks.

The tricky part? Most big events don’t release tickets this early, but don’t worry—we’ve pulled together some of the best local experiences you can still wrap up this season.

  1. Thermëa: Imagine giving someone the gift of total relaxation. Outdoor baths, saunas, and all the chill vibes. Perfect for anyone who’s been running around the whole year. (LINK)

  2. The Magic Room Spa: This place has been a Winnipeg staple for years. Nails, facials, and even laser treatments—it’s all about helping someone reset and feel great. (LINK)

  3. Concert Tickets: Multiple concerts are happening next year like Katy Perry, The Beach Boys, Kane Brown, Nelly, and Tate McRae. Tickets make for an amazing night out! (LINK)

  4. Local Gift Baskets: Not exactly an experience, but it feels just as thoughtful. Stores like The Locals have these amazing baskets filled with goodies from right here in Winnipeg. It’s a great way to support small businesses while giving something special. (LINK)

  5. Cooking & Baking Classes: Know someone who loves food? Gift them a fun class at the Food Studio, where they can learn to whip up desserts, soups, and more. (LINK)

  6. Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG-Qaumajuq): Tickets to an exhibit or a yearly membership is such a nice way to give the gift of art—and the stunning Inuit Art Centre is worth seeing more than once. (LINK)

I hope this helps you find something perfect for everyone on your list. These are all about making memories, and honestly, isn’t that what the holidays are all about? 🎁

New Fire-Paramedic Station Opens in Waverley West

With fires and emergencies happening all around the city, it feels good to know the city is listening to us. On Thursday morning, Waverley West officially opened a temporary fire paramedic station, and it’s a big step forward!

Here’s why:

  • Faster response times: The station brings fire and ambulance crews closer to our growing community.

  • Modular design: It’s temporary and adaptable, staying in place until the permanent station is ready.

Having emergency services nearby makes all the difference in a critical situation. This isn’t just about growth—it’s about keeping our community safe and cared for when it matters most.

U of M Adds Observatory for Students

Our schools have been stepping up their game lately. MITT introduced new programs, RRC Polytech announcing a new healthcare facility, and now as reported by CTV News, the U of M is joining the list with a brand-new observatory in Glenlea.

Here’s what’s exciting:

  • Remote access: Students can control the telescope from anywhere with Wi-Fi, capturing stunning images of space.

  • Hands-on learning: Grad students are already using it to study how galaxies form, adding valuable experience to their resumes.

  • Future plans: There’s even talk of building a bigger observatory in the Northwest Territories to study satellites.

It’s amazing to see this kind of investment happening right here in Winnipeg. Projects like these prepare the next generation for success while positioning our city as a hub for innovation and learning. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning!

City Updates

North End Sewage Plant Gets $150M Boost

Source: City of Winnipeg

As reported by CBC News, The North End sewage plant just got a $150 million boost from Ottawa, bringing us closer to much-needed upgrades.

This project is the most expensive in Winnipeg’s history, and here’s why it’s so important:

  • Keeping up with growth: Without these upgrades, the plant will max out in 4–6 years. That means no room for new housing, businesses, or industries—a major issue for a growing city.

  • Protecting Lake Winnipeg: The upgrades will help remove phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater, reducing harm to one of our province’s most cherished lakes.

Mayor Gillingham called this funding progress but said there’s still a long way to go. With an estimated price tag of $3 billion, there’s plenty left to figure out—but this feels like a step in the right direction.

It’s good to see all levels of government working together on something that impacts every single one of us. Let’s hope the momentum keeps building!

Lizzie Lanes Brings Bowling Back to Windsor Park

Bowling is back in Windsor Park, and honestly, it feels like a win for the whole community. As reported by CTV News, Lizzie Lanes has officially opened at the old Windsor Bowling Lanes location on Elizabeth Road.

After sitting empty for nearly a decade, the space has been completely revamped. The new owner, Jeffery Patrick, wanted to create a fun spot where families and friends can bowl, watch sports, and even enjoy live music.

So, If you’re in the area, head to 678 Elizabeth Rd. and check it out!

Birchwood Terrace Safe for Tenants to Return

It’s been a long road for the residents of Birchwood Terrace. After being evacuated in May due to severe structural issues. As reported by CTV News, the apartment building on Portage Avenue has finally been deemed safe, and tenants can move back in.

It’s heartbreaking to think of 250 people being displaced for months, but the city has now confirmed the building meets all safety requirements.

For those who called Birchwood Terrace home, this is a long-overdue return to normal. Let’s hope their transition back is as smooth as possible.
