Free Art Workshops at Winnipeg’s Public Library

Growing up in Winnipeg, we’ve all spent time at the library. Maybe it was flipping through books as a kid, cramming for exams, or just escaping the cold with a good read. But now, the Winnipeg Public Library is making it even more of a creative hub.

They’ve just announced their next Maker-in-Residence—local artist Raymond Lyttle. And if you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at watercolour, print-making, or even sculpting, he’s your guy.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Raymond Lyttle, a Winnipeg-based artist, will be leading the program. He works with watercolours, ink, ceramics, and oils.

  • Weekly drop-in studio sessions will run at Millennium Library’s ideaMILL, where anyone can stop by and get creative.

  • Workshops at different library branches will teach new skills, from painting to sculpture, with sessions designed for families and youth.

  • Runs from March 3 – June 14, 2025—plenty of time to explore your artistic side!

Best part? It’s all free. Just show up, try something new, and see where creativity takes you!

Warm Weather Hits Pause on River Trail Skating

Winnipeg winters are full of surprises. One minute, you're layering up against the deep freeze, and the next, it's warm enough to make you question if February forgot how to be winter.

That’s exactly what’s happening right now at The Forks. The Nestawaya River Trail and on-land skating trails are temporarily closed thanks to the unseasonably warm temps. It’s not ideal, but let’s be real—this break from the bitter cold has been nice.

Here’s the deal:

  • All skating trails are closed for now, but don’t pack away your skates just yet.

  • Walking, cross-country skiing, and cycling trails are still open, so you can still enjoy the river path.

  • Colder temps are on the way this weekend, which should help bring the ice back.

So if you were hoping to get in a few more laps, hold tight. The ice will be back soon—just in time to remind us that winter isn’t done with us yet.

Winnipeg Circus Club!

There’s something magical about watching someone juggle, balance, or move in ways you didn’t think were possible. That’s exactly what you’ll see at Winnipeg Circus Club’s 10th Annual Showcase—a night where local performers, from beginners to pros, take the stage to show off their hard-earned skills.

But this isn’t just about the fun. It’s their biggest fundraiser of the year. Every ticket sold helps keep their practice space running and brings special workshops to the community.

Here’s why you should go:

  • See everything from juggling to acrobatics, hula hooping to unicycling—performed by real Winnipeggers.

  • It’s their 10th anniversary show, and they’re making it extra special.

  • All proceeds go toward keeping the club alive, so more people can discover the joy of circus arts.

Winnipeg’s Most Wanted List for February

We usually steer clear of bad news unless it directly impacts our community. But when it comes to safety, staying informed matters.

  • Knowing who’s on the list can help keep your neighborhood safe, especially if you recognize someone who shouldn’t be around.

  • Crime Stoppers takes anonymous tips, so if you have any information, you can report it without putting yourself at risk.

Higher Sewer Rates Might Be Coming

Nobody likes bill increases, and this one could hit Winnipeg homeowners and businesses harder than usual. As reported by CTV News, the city is warning that sewer rates might be going way up, with more details expected on March 4.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Upgrades to the North End Water Pollution Control Centre—a $2.3-$3 billion project are driving costs up.

  • City officials are looking into affordability programs to help ease the burden on homeowners.

But, nothing’s final yet, this could have a big impact on household and business budgets. We’ll keep you updated when the full report and more information is released—but let’s hope it’s not too big of an increase.

Jets on a 10 Game Winning Streak!

Winnipeg Jets X

Some moments in sports just feel bigger than the game itself—and Monday night was one of those moments. The Winnipeg Jets pulled off another thrilling comeback, taking down the Sharks 2-1 in overtime. But the real story? Mark Scheifele made history.

With his game-winning goal, Scheifele became the Jets’ all-time franchise goals leader, notching his 329th career goal and passing Ilya Kovalchuk.

Here’s why this night mattered:

  • Scheifele now holds the record for most goals in Jets/Thrashers history, cementing his place in franchise history.

  • The Jets extended their win streak to 10 games, breaking a 40-year-old Winnipeg NHL record.

  • And to top it all off, it was another last-minute thriller, with Josh Morrissey forcing overtime before Scheifele sealed the deal.

This team is showing serious heart as the playoffs get closer. Next up? A road game against Ottawa—let’s see if they can keep the streak alive!

Wesmen Volleyball Heads to Playoffs

Staying on the topic of local sports, the Wesmen volleyball teams are making history this season. If you love high-energy, competitive volleyball, this is the time to pay attention.

  • The Wesmen men’s team just wrapped up their best season in nearly 30 years, finishing with a 17-3 record under new head coach Chris Voth. They’re now one series win away from hosting the Canada West Final Four for the first time ever.

  • While the Wesmen women’s team is also moving on in the playoffs, they fought hard to take down the Calgary Dinos in five sets and now face the Pandas in the next round.

Big games are happening this week at Duckworth Centre, with matches kicking off Thursday at 7 p.m. If you’re a UWinnipeg alum, a student, or just love supporting local teams, now’s the time to show up, wear your red, and Rep the W! 🏐
