Manitoba Bans Phones in Classrooms

Starting this September, Manitoba schools are tightening up on cellphone use in classrooms. The idea is simple: fewer distractions, more focus.

For kids in kindergarten through Grade 8, phones are off-limits during school hours—yes, even during lunch and breaks. High school students get a bit more freedom, with phones allowed during lunch and breaks but not in class.

The goal here? To help students stay focused, learn more, and engage better with their teachers and classmates. It’s about creating a consistent, distraction-free learning environment across the province. Schools will have some flexibility for medical needs or specific learning requirements, so no worries there.

What does this mean for our community? Hopefully, it means kids are more present and engaged in their education, and maybe even a little less screen-obsessed. It’s a shift, but one that could really pay off in the long run.

What's Happening in Winnipeg?

Local Updates:

Winnipegger Saves Child from Drowning

So, something incredible happened at St. Malo Beach. A 3-year-old wandered into the water, and things got really scary. But a Winnipegger who just happened to be there knew exactly what to do.

As reported by City News, when he saw the child face down, he didn’t hesitate—he jumped right in and started CPR. It was touch and go for a bit, but after a few intense minutes, the kid started breathing again. Honestly, it’s one of those moments that makes you realize how important it is to know CPR. This guy’s quick thinking made all the difference.

Mary Poppins Returns to Rainbow Stage

If you’re looking for some feel-good entertainment, Mary Poppins is back at Rainbow Stage, running until September 1st, so there’s plenty of time to catch it. This production is extra special with Alexandra Herzog making her directorial debut, adding fresh energy to the classic story.

The show is filled with the charm, magic, and heartwarming moments we all love about Mary Poppins. It’s a perfect way to spend a summer evening, enjoying live theater under the stars. So, grab your friends or family and head to Rainbow Stage for a night of nostalgia and fun!

Business:

Yoga Public Reopens in Downtown

Yoga Public is reopening on September 14th! After a break, they’re back at their original spot on Fort Street, bringing all the yoga goodness we’ve missed.

Thanks to a partnership with the Manitoba Métis Federation, this 16,000-square-foot studio is ready to welcome everyone back with hot yoga, powerful flows, and new meditation classes. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just starting out, this is the perfect time to get back on the mat.

Preservation Hall Restaurant Closes Its Doors

Source: Preservation Hall Website

Winnipeg’s food scene is losing a gem—Preservation Hall at 655 Empress Street has permanently closed. Owned by Tristan and Melanie Foucault, this spot was known for its farm-to-table focus and charcuterie. Tristan, a well-respected chef with an impressive background, brought his culinary expertise to the forefront, making Preservation Hall a favorite for many. While it’s sad to see it go, Tristan and Melanie’s impact on our local dining scene won’t be forgotten.

7-Eleven Stores in Winnipeg at Risk of Closing

And the tough news doesn’t stop there—up to 10 of our local 7-Eleven stores might close because of rising theft and safety concerns. These stores have been a part of our neighborhoods for years, so it’s tough to think they might disappear. For many, they’re more than just a quick stop—they’re a place to grab essentials when you need them. Let’s hope a solution is found to keep them open and safe for everyone.
