Flu Vaccines Are Still Available This Winter

If it feels like everyone around you has been sick lately, you’re not imagining it. Between school drop-offs, work, and family gatherings, a lot of colds, flu, and other viruses are making the rounds right now.

With most of winter still ahead of us, this is a good moment to check in on seasonal vaccines, not just for the flu, but for COVID-19 and RSV too. These illnesses can hit harder than expected, even for people who are generally healthy.

Here’s a quick reminder of what’s available in Manitoba right now:

  • Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are free for everyone six months and older

  • You can get them at pharmacies, clinics, public health offices, and health centres

  • Even when a flu shot isn’t a perfect match, it still helps prevent severe illness

  • Babies born between Oct. 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026 can receive protection against RSV

  • Older adults, young kids, pregnant people, and those with ongoing health conditions face higher risks

Most people recover at home, but prevention makes a real difference. A quick appointment now helps protect you, the people around you, and takes pressure off our health-care system during a busy season.

If you or someone in your family has been meaning to book, now’s a good time to check it off the list.

Together with Eleven Hundred Dance!

A Fresh Way To Start The New Year

January always comes with that quiet itch to try something new. A new routine. A new habit. Something that gets you out of the house and into a better rhythm.

If picking up a new activity is on your list next year, 1100 Dance Studio is a really easy place to start.

Classes are just $15 each, which makes it one of the most affordable ways in the city to do something fun, active, and a little outside your comfort zone. No pressure, no experience needed, and no need to bring a partner either.

It’s the kind of thing that feels small, but ends up being something you look forward to each week.

Here’s what they offer:

  • Argentine Tango for something slow and connected

  • Ballroom for a classic, relaxed feel

  • Salsa if you want energy and warmth

  • Swing and Lindy Hop for lots of laughs

  • Hip Hop for something upbeat and modern

  • Line Dancing for a friendly, community vibe

Whether you’re looking for a weekly activity, a reason to move after work, or something different to try with a friend, this is one of those places that makes it feel simple.

City Updates

Garbage & Recycling Changes Over the Holidays

Source: City of Winnipeg

If you were wondering why your garbage or recycling didn’t get picked up yesterday, you’re not alone. With the holidays, collection days shift a bit, and it can be easy to miss.

Here’s what to know during the holiday stretch:

  • There is no garbage or recycling pickup on Christmas Day

  • If your regular collection day is Thursday, put your carts out Today

  • And if your regular collection day is Friday, put your carts out on Saturday

And just a heads up, the same thing will happen next week for New Year’s Day, so expect the same one-day delay again.

These holiday schedule changes happen every year, but they still catch people off guard, especially when routines are already a bit off.

If you’re ever unsure about your pickup day, it’s worth double-checking before rolling your carts out. It can save you an extra week of holding onto things you meant to toss.

Winnipeg Transit Sees Early Improvements With Winter Schedule

Source: City of Winnipeg

If you ride the bus regularly, especially in winter, you know how frustrating late routes can be. With the winter schedule officially kicking in, the City made a few targeted changes to help buses run more reliably, and early signs are pointing in the right direction.

After adding more service hours to some of the most delayed routes, on-time performance has already started to improve, especially on routes that struggled the most earlier this fall.

Here’s what’s been happening so far:

  • Route D12 saw about 39% fewer late buses

  • Route D13 dropped late buses by roughly 56%

  • Route D16 improved by around 25%

  • Extra service hours were added to Route F8

  • More trips were added on school-serving routes

  • And on-request service now runs later, with expanded hours until 2 a.m. in most zones

These changes came directly from rider feedback, and the City is still listening. If you take the bus often, or know someone who relies on it daily, this is a good moment to speak up about what’s working and what could be better.

The Final Giveaways of the Holidays 🎁

We’re officially down to the last giveaways of the year, and we just want to pause for a second and say thank you. Truly. The support, kind messages, and excitement around these giveaways meant a lot to us, and it’s been really special being able to give back during the holidays.

We also want to acknowledge that entering through Instagram wasn’t the easiest for everyone. That feedback really matters to us, and it’s something we’ll keep in mind as we plan future giveaways. We’re always trying to make things more accessible and better for the whole community.

Free Winter Weekend Fun for Families in Winnipeg

Source: City of Winnipeg

With a lot of people still on holiday, this is one of those weekends where getting out of the house sounds nice, but spending money doesn’t. Luckily, winter in Winnipeg actually makes that pretty easy. There are plenty of free ways to get outside, move a bit, or just change things up without much planning.

If you’re looking for something simple to do with family, friends, or even on your own…

Here are a few winter activities to keep in mind as conditions allow:

  • Cross-country ski trails at parks like Kildonan, St. Vital, and Harbourview

  • Walking paths and greenways that stay open all winter

  • Living Prairie Museum winter Saturdays, with snowshoeing and guided activities

  • And lastly, indoor options like free public skating at arenas and free swim times at city pools
