Winnipeg Researcher Changes Cancer Care
Have you ever wondered what research funding is used for? I know when I was a university student, I’d always wonder what kind of research folks were working on. Well, here’s a pretty amazing example.
Dr. Anuraag Shrivastav, a professor of biology at the U of W, has made a huge breakthrough by identifying a protein that might turn the tide in treating aggressive breast cancer. This discovery could help doctors create targeted treatments to stop the spread of cancer, giving new hope to those facing tough-to-treat cancers like triple-negative breast cancer.
For Winnipeggers, this is about more than just scientific progress. Research like this brings critical funding and recognition to our city, helping Winnipeg become a key player in scientific research. It’s also a promising step for younger women, especially women of color who are more likely to face these aggressive cancers, to receive better, targeted care.
Survey for St. Boniface’s New Aquatic Park!
The City of Winnipeg is planning a brand-new outdoor aquatic park in St. Boniface, and they're looking for input from the community to make it happen. With some older pools nearing the end of their run, this new space is set to bring fresh, family-friendly fun that meets the future recreation needs of the neighborhood.
The city wants to know what you’d like to see—whether it's splash pads, slides, or accessible spaces for everyone to enjoy. You can share your ideas through an online survey (open until December 4) or head to an open house on November 14 at the Champlain Community Centre from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This is a chance to help design a space that will keep St. Boniface active, connected, and welcoming for years to come. Let’s make sure this new park truly reflects the spirit of our community!

City Updates
New $13.3M Community Centre in Manitoba
We usually cover Winnipeg news, but this is just too big to miss! Taché has officially started construction on a brand-new community centre with a $13.3 million investment. This center, backed by the provincial and federal government, will be the heart of the area, bringing people from Lorette, Landmark, and other nearby towns together in a space designed for everyone.
Once it opens in 2026, the centre will feature a skating rink, seniors’ centre, library, multipurpose area, and more—a true hub for families and friends. For Winnipeggers, this is exciting news for our neighbors just down the road and a reminder of how community support and investment can transform local areas into vibrant spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Green Back Lane Project Faces a Tough Call
As reported by CTV News, Winnipeg’s green back lane pilot project might be coming to an end, as a city committee recommended against expanding it. The pilot was launched to reduce stormwater runoff, but after analyzing the data, the city says there just isn’t enough proof it’s working as intended.
It’s a tough decision, especially for those hoping to see more eco-friendly infrastructure. The city still plans to explore green initiatives where there’s proven impact, so it’s not the end of green projects in Winnipeg. With the final call expected at the November 1 meeting, we’ll keep you updated on what they decide next for Winnipeg’s green future.

Jets’ Winning Streak Ends
Source: Winnipeg Jets X
The Winnipeg Jets’ perfect season start finally hit a bump. After an incredible 8-0-0 run and a 16-game home-winning streak from last season, the Jets took their first loss on Monday night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, with a 6-4 final score.
Toronto got off to a fast 4-0 lead, but the Jets battled back with Kyle Connor’s two goals, giving fans an action-packed game. It was a tough night but a solid reminder of the team’s resilience. Let’s be hopeful that this loss will fuel their energy for the next game and keep the excitement alive as the season heats up.
Honoring Winnipeg’s Afghanistan Veterans
As reported by CTV News, The Fort Garry Horse regiment in Winnipeg has just unveiled a monument dedicated to the Canadians who served in Afghanistan. This Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) 3 memorial, now at the Harcus Strachan Armoury, honors the service and sacrifices of over 40,000 Canadian troops, including many Manitobans, who served between 2001 and 2014.
For Winnipeggers, this monument is a place to remember and say thank you to the brave soldiers who put everything on the line. It’s not only a tribute to those who lost their lives but also to the veterans who came home carrying the physical and emotional scars of war. It’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those in our community.
