Manitoba Adds 10,000 New Jobs
Hey Winnipeggers!
The wait is almost over! We’ve officially sent the Digest Cards off for printing because we’re determined to get them to you before Christmas. They’ll make perfect stocking stuffers for your kids, grandkids, or even a little treat for yourself.
With the Canada Post strike still going strong, I might just have to hand-deliver them myself, haha.
We’re planning to launch them on Monday, and you’ll get a 12-hour head start before social media. There are only 250 available, and once they’re gone, they’re gone—so don’t miss out!
Not only does it help fund this newsletter, but it also gives you a chance to explore some amazing local spots around the city. Let’s make this Christmas all about supporting local and spreading holiday cheer. ❤️

Holiday Checkstop Program – Week 1 Results
As we mentioned last week, the Winnipeg Police have kicked off their annual Holiday Checkstop Program, aimed at keeping everyone safe on these icy winter roads. The program is back this year, running through December, including New Year’s Eve.
Here’s how Week 1 went:
1,219 vehicles stopped
12 roadside warnings issued
9 roadside fails recorded
2 criminal impaired driving charges
And 12 traffic offence notices handed out
To add to that, as reported by City News, Winnipeg Police made a significant $35,000 drug bust last week after a traffic stop on Taylor Avenue. Officers arrested three individuals and seized weapons, ammunition, and a large quantity of cocaine and pills—showing us the importance of these stops and how they protect our community.
The roads are slippery, and even one drink can be too much. Plan ahead, call a cab, or arrange a ride—your safety, and that of our community is worth it.
Manitoba Adds 10,000 New Jobs Last Month
As you’ve probably read in our previous editions, Manitoba’s been working hard to create new jobs—whether through trade deals, grants, or big investments. And now, we’re seeing the results.
Last month, Manitoba added 10,000 full-time jobs, outpacing the national average. Finance Minister Adrien Sala credits the province’s economic plan, which includes major moves like:
A $23.4 million investment in NFI Group earlier this year, creating hundreds of jobs in Winnipeg.
Launching a critical minerals strategy to position Manitoba as a key player in global trade.
Our unemployment rate also stayed below the national average, which is pretty solid considering how wild the economy’s been lately.
So whether you’re job hunting or just cheering for local progress, it’s a win for all of us. Here’s to a stronger Manitoba!

Charity of the Week:

Source: Salvation Army
The Salvation Army
If you live in Winnipeg, you’ve heard about the incredible work the Salvation Army does—whether it’s helping families in need, providing shelter, or serving hot meals. And now, it’s our turn to help.
The ongoing Canada Post strike has hit their holiday fundraising hard. Donations are down 50%, leaving a huge gap in the support they rely on to keep their programs running. These aren’t just numbers; they’re people in our community who depend on the Salvation Army’s help.
But we can step up and make a difference! Here’s how you can help:
Donate at a Christmas kettle (many now take debit and credit).
Call 1-800-SAL-ARMY to give directly.
Or visit their website to make an online donation.
Let’s make sure they have the resources to keep supporting Winnipeg when it’s needed most. Every little bit makes a big difference!

City Updates
Improving Safety at Portage Hospital
We’ve all been there at some point. Visiting a hospital, feeling uneasy. Well, you’re not alone. With increased security measures already rolling out in Winnipeg, the Manitoba government is now bringing similar changes to the rest of the province—starting with Portage District General Hospital.
As part of a three-month pilot project, Long Plain First Nation Safety Officers (FNSO) will be stationed at the hospital to enhance safety for patients, workers, and visitors. Here’s what they’ll be doing:
Screening for weapons, contraband, and intoxicants.
Patrolling parking lots and offering safe walks for staff.
Taking over custody of patients held under the Mental Health Act.
This initiative builds on the success of similar programs in Winnipeg hospitals, where safety concerns have been significantly addressed. For communities across Manitoba, this is a step toward making healthcare facilities safer and more welcoming for everyone.
Winnipeg’s Permit Process Just Got Easier
Dealing with permits has always been a hassle—slow lines, endless paperwork, and waiting for approvals. But finally, the city is stepping up with Permits Online, making the process faster and simpler.
You can now apply for:
Commercial building and trade permits.
Sign permits.
Residential plumbing, electrical, and building permits (from earlier phases).
Letting you:
Save and return to applications within 30 days.
Submit documents, track progress, and make payments—all online.
The city’s also planning a more accessible and user-friendly version in 2025. For businesses, developers, and homeowners, this means less hassle and quicker project starts.
Community News
Bob Odenkirk at the Jets Game
If you watch TV, you’ve definitely heard about Better Call Saul. And if you were at the Jets game on Sunday, you might’ve spotted its star, Bob Odenkirk, sitting in the crowd!
During a celebrity lookalike game on the jumbotron, the camera cut to Bob himself, wearing a Jets hat and sweater, giving a thumbs up to fans. Despite the 4-1 loss to the Blue Jackets, seeing him there was a win for Winnipeg’s spirit.
As I’m writing this, the Jets are gearing up to face the Boston Bruins tonight at 7 PM in a home game. Let’s hope they can bounce back!
And hey, maybe Odenkirk brought some good luck we’ll see tonight. Fingers crossed!
$750,000 for 2SLGBTQ+ Seniors Housing Complex
If you’ve driven past 545 Broadway, you’ve probably noticed the Place of Pride housing complex. At 12,000 square feet, it’s already providing affordable housing for 2SLGBTQ+ seniors. As reported by CBC News, now it’s getting a $750,000 boost from Canada Life and Power Corp.
Here’s why this project matters:
Phase 2 will add programming spaces, counselling rooms, a café, a library, and gardens.
The first four-story building, with 21 units, is almost fully tenanted.
It provides a safe, welcoming place for older adults who often don’t feel comfortable in traditional housing.
This isn’t just about housing—it’s about creating a community where people can thrive, connect, and truly feel at home. Construction for Phase 2 is set to begin in 2025, and it’s a major win for inclusion in Winnipeg.
