Together with The EX!

Manitoba’s Largest Fair Is Coming Back This Summer

Every year there’s a moment when Winnipeg finally feels like summer again. For a lot of us, it’s the first night at The EX.

Early tickets are officially on sale, and this is the cheapest pricing will ever be. The EX is back June 12 to 21 at Exhibition Park.

Ten days. Bright lights. Loud rides. And that first bite of mini donuts, you swear you’ll share but never do.

Here’s what’s waiting for you:

  • Thrill rides and family attractions

  • Live performers and local music

  • Classic fair food plus new treats

  • Juried art, photography, and quilt competitions featuring Manitoba talent

But this year, there’s something brand new happening right on the midway.

On June 13, one Manitoba couple will say “I do” in the middle of The EX as part of Marriage on the Midway.

The winning couple will receive:

  • Professional photography

  • Officiant services

  • Horse and carriage ride

  • Private helicopter ride for two

  • Wedding décor and florals

  • And a one-night stay in Headingley

Applications close March 31, and the winning couple will be announced in early April.

Restaurant of the Week: Jenna Rae Cakes

One of Winnipeg’s Most Loved Dessert Shops

If you have a sweet tooth in Winnipeg, chances are you’ve heard of Jenna Rae Cakes.

What started as a small bakery on Academy Road has grown into one of the city’s most recognizable dessert brands, known for colourful treats, creative flavours, and beautifully designed cakes.

Here’s what people keep coming back for:

  • Their famous macarons in bright, rotating flavours

  • Cookie sandwiches and cupcakes that feel both nostalgic and playful

  • Custom celebration cakes that look as good as they taste

  • And a cheerful bakery space that always feels like a little celebration

If you’re looking for something fun to try this week, Jenna Rae Cakes will be hosting a Dessert Bagel Pop-Up with The Forge Bagel this Saturday, March 14 at their Academy location.

The pop-up will feature Forge’s warm bagels paired with Jenna Rae’s whipped dessert cream cheese dips, along with sweet treats and the first taste of their new JRC coffee.

From everyday desserts to celebration cakes, Jenna Rae Cakes has become a spot many Winnipeggers return to whenever they’re craving something sweet.

And if the bagel pop-up caught your eye…

City Updates

Emergency Crews Remind Residents To Stay Off Rivers And Ponds

Source: City of Winnipeg

As temperatures begin to change, Winnipeg emergency responders are reminding residents to stay away from rivers, retention ponds, and other frozen waterways.

While some areas may still look frozen, officials say all ice should now be considered dangerous. Warmer weather and moving water underneath the surface can weaken ice quickly, creating hidden risks that aren’t always visible.

Here’s what you should keep in mind:

  • Ice conditions are unpredictable this time of year, even if the surface looks solid

  • Falling through ice can make it very difficult to climb back out

  • River currents can pull someone under the ice, and cold water can quickly lead to hypothermia

  • Walking on unsafe ice can also put emergency responders at risk during rescues

Parents are encouraged to remind children to stay off the ice, and pet owners should keep animals leashed near frozen waterways.

And if you see someone on unsafe ice, call 911 and stay nearby to help responders locate them quickly.

Province Offers $10M in Security Rebates for Local Businesses

The Manitoba government is reminding local businesses about a $10 million security rebate program designed to help cover the cost of repairs and safety upgrades.

The program supports businesses that have experienced property damage or want to improve security at their location.

Businesses with 75 or fewer employees per location may be eligible to receive up to $2,500 per location.

So far, more than 900 businesses across Manitoba have already applied, with the province paying out an average of over $100,000 per week in rebates.

Here are some of the upgrades and repairs that may qualify:

  • Security cameras and alarm systems

  • Motion detectors and improved lighting

  • Window protection or security fencing

  • Repairs for broken windows, doors, or locks

  • Graffiti removal and property damage repairs

The rebate helps offset costs for upgrades or repairs made on or after August 23, 2024, and applications are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

For many small businesses, upgrades like these can make a real difference in helping protect their staff, customers, and storefronts.

So if you own a business or know someone who does, be sure to click the link below to learn how to apply!

Manitoba Expands Women’s Health Programs Across the Province

Thousands of Manitobans are now benefiting from expanded women’s health programs across the province, including free birth control, menopause treatment, and improved access to screening and care.

Since the province lowered the age for breast cancer screening, more than 700 screening appointments have already been booked in the first two months.

At the same time, new programs are helping many women access treatments that were previously expensive or difficult to afford.

Here’s what the impact looks like so far:

  • More than 55,000 women have accessed the province’s free prescription birth control program

  • Over 200,000 prescriptions have been filled since the program launched in October 2024

  • More than 36,000 women are saving money each month through free hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopause

  • Manitoba is also one of only two provinces currently offering free HRT

The province is also working to expand services further, including a new community-based menopause clinic currently in development.

As Women’s Month continues, the province says these programs are part of ongoing efforts to make it easier for women to access care and support throughout different stages of life.

Possibly the Last Exchange Dinner Club

Making new friends as an adult is weirdly hard.

Work friends stay at work.
Old friends get busy.
And meeting new people usually means awkward small talk.

So we built something simple. Dinner Club.

So far 200+ Winnipeggers have already joined us around the table. Most show up not knowing anyone. Most leave with a few new friends.

Our next dinner is March 18 in the Exchange District.

But here’s the fun part.

You won’t know the restaurant until the day of.

We reveal the location the morning of the dinner. Then everyone shows up, finds their table, and the conversations just… happen.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Small tables of people matched through our quiz

  • A local Exchange District restaurant

  • The location revealed the day of

  • Easy conversation with people also looking to meet new friends

One more thing.

This might be the last Dinner Club we host in the Exchange for a while.

In April, we’re likely moving the dinners to a new neighbourhood.

So if you’ve been thinking about joining one…

This is probably the one to try!
