Manitoba Increases Minimum Wage!

Manitoba's minimum wage just went up to $15.80! That’s a 50-cent bump, which might not sound like much, but it’s one of those small changes that can make a big difference.

If you're working a 40-hour week, that adds up to a bit more cash in your pocket each month—every little bit helps when it comes to paying bills and handling life's daily expenses, right? This hike is tied to inflation, so it's designed to keep up with the rising costs we're all seeing. While Manitoba isn't hitting Ontario's $17.20 an hour or BC's whopping $17.40, it’s a solid step forward for a lot of folks here.

It’s a move in the right direction, and hopefully, it helps make life in Winnipeg a little easier for many.

Winnipeg Comes Together for Orange Shirt Day

Thousands of Winnipeggers gathered for Orange Shirt Day, walking from The Forks to the RBC Convention Centre in a powerful show of unity. The healing walk, in its fourth year, almost didn’t happen due to funding issues, but last-minute support from the province and the Southern Chiefs' Organization saved the event.

Premier Wab Kinew joined the powwow, reminding young people to stay strong and keep their culture alive. The turnout was incredible, with both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people coming together to honor residential school survivors and remember the children who never made it home.

Each year, the event grows, showing how committed the community is to healing together. It’s a day to reflect, but also a reminder that we move forward with strength and unity. Thank you, Winnipeg for showing up!

Power Outage for Thousands of Homes

If you had power outages the past couple of days, it was likely due to those crazy winds tearing through the city. Things to look out for:

  • Trees are snapping, and power lines are down.

  • Thousands of homes lost power, with many still in the dark.

  • Manitoba Hydro is doing their best to fix things, but it might take a bit longer.

So, pin down your trampolines, tuck away any loose backyard stuff, and keep the kids and grandkids safe! If you see a downed power line, stay clear and call 911!

Ever wanted to be in a movie?

Well, now’s your chance! As reported by CTV News, a new film featuring Oscar nominees Djimon Hounsou and Kodi Smit-McPhee is being made right here in Winnipeg. They’re looking for Somali, African, or Black actors for a few key roles.

If you or someone you know fits the role, it’s time to get in on the action! Filming is happening between Oct. 4-18—so don’t miss out, and share this with anyone who might be interested!

Tuxedo kids are getting a new playground!

The Manitoba government is working with local residents to create a fun, safe space for kids to play, connect, and get active. The design process kicks off this month, and they’re even asking local kids to help shape the vision of the new playground.

This is a big deal for the community, especially since the old playground was demolished back in 2018 without any plans to replace it. Now, with the focus on accessibility and Indigenous cultural elements, this new space is set to be a welcoming spot for everyone.

Construction will start in spring 2025, and by summer next year, kids will have a fresh new place to play.
