Manitoba Invests $2M to Support Local Families Across the City

More support is on the way for families across Winnipeg.

The Manitoba government has increased its funding for United Way Winnipeg by $500,000, bringing its total contribution to $2 million. Through United Way’s For Every Family initiative, this funding helps strengthen neighbourhood-based family resource centres so families can access support close to home.

With United Way matching the province’s contribution, that means $4 million per year for the next three years will go directly into supporting 25 family resource centres across the city.

These centres are often the first place families turn when they need guidance.

The funding helps provide:

  • Parenting support and education

  • Counselling and advocacy

  • Cultural and health programs

  • Youth and employment support

  • Programs that help keep children safely at home

The investment will also expand NorWest Co-op Community Health’s WrapAround program and add 11 Child and Family Services liaison positions, helping families connect to services earlier and with clearer guidance.

For many families, having support nearby can make all the difference.

Source: City of Winnipeg

Winnipeg Animal Services is hoping to make a few perfect matches this Valentine’s weekend.

Right now, the shelter has over 30 dogs in care, nearly double what they normally see this time of year. To help more of them find homes, the City is offering a special adoption fee promotion on February 14 and 15.

For those two days, dog adoption fees are reduced from $323 to $185.

Here’s what every adoption includes:

  • Spay or neuter surgery

  • First licence

  • Veterinarian check up

  • First vaccinations

  • Tattoo and microchip

Adoptions are done in person at 1057 Logan Ave., and the process usually takes 30 minutes to one hour. You can also preview adoptable dogs online before visiting.

City Updates

Major Redevelopment Underway at Kildonan Place

Big changes are officially in motion at Kildonan Place.

Work has begun on a major redevelopment project, starting with demolition of the former Cineplex and adjacent retail units. The highlight is a brand new food court set to open in early 2027.

Here’s what shoppers can expect:

  • 10 vendors, a mix of national and local tenants

  • Seating is increasing from 325 to 550 seats

  • A zero-waste design with tray drop-off and waste collection stations

The current food court will remain open during construction, though some seating may be reduced at times as work continues.

And in addition to the 2027 food court changes, more updates are coming sooner:

  • New men’s, women’s, and family washrooms, plus a separate nursing room opening later this year

  • A new main entrance configuration, with temporary entrances opening during construction

  • Guest Services and mall administration offices are relocating to a new west wing space this spring and more

It’s a big shift for a mall many of us grew up visiting, and it’s clear they’re thinking long term about comfort, sustainability, and creating a space families can gather for years to come.
