Winnipeg To Potentially Lower Residential Speed Limits

Source: Engage Winnipeg
Stepping off the curb with a child or walking through your neighbourhood shouldn’t feel stressful.
That’s why, after years of pilot projects and community feedback, Winnipeg’s public service is recommending that the default residential speed limit drop from 50 km/h to 40 km/h. The main reason is simple: safety.
According to the report, lowering speeds could mean 10 to 20 percent fewer fatal crashes and 6 to 12 percent fewer collisions that cause serious injuries.
Here’s what was tested in the 2023 pilot project:
Reduced speed limits to 30 km/h or 40 km/h in Richmond West, Worthington, Bourkevale, and Tyndall Park South
Measured changes in actual driving speeds
Gathered feedback directly from residents in those neighbourhoods
The results showed driving speeds dropped in most areas, and many residents said they felt less concerned about speeding after the changes were in place.
If approved, some neighbourhoods could even move to 30 km/h. The change would first require approval from the province to update legislation.
The Standing Policy Committee on Public Works will discuss the proposal on March 4, and the meeting will be broadcast live.

More Buses Are Coming to Winnipeg’s Busiest Transit Routes

Source: City of Winnipeg
Transit changes are on the way this spring, and this time it’s about adding service where it’s needed most.
Starting April 12, Winnipeg Transit will roll out more trips on some of the city’s busiest routes, along with extended evening hours on select lines.
Here’s what’s coming:
More buses added to high-ridership routes like the F5, F8, 74, 557 and 676
Extended service past midnight on 10 routes including D10, D14, D16, 28, 38, 43, 70 and 74
Proposed routing updates to D16, D18 and D19 to help buses run more on time (pending approval for June)
Transit officials say these updates are based on rider feedback and aim to improve on-time performance and overall access.
After months of concerns about the new network, seeing more buses on busy routes and longer service hours is a welcome adjustment.
P.S. Share this with your friends, classmates, and coworkers who take the bus so they know what’s changing!

Manitoba Launches New Task Force To Tackle Drug Trafficking

Source: Winnipeg Police Service
For many families across Manitoba, concerns about drugs and gang activity aren’t just headlines; they’re everyday worries.
In response, the province has announced a new Manitoba Organized Crime and Drug Trafficking Task Force.
The move brings major law enforcement agencies together to share information faster, coordinate investigations, and target the groups behind drug trafficking and related crime.
Here’s who will be part of the task force:
Manitoba Justice and the Manitoba Criminal Intelligence Centre
RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency
Winnipeg Police Service and Brandon Police Service
Manitoba First Nations Police Service
Police services in Altona, Winkler, and Morden
The task force will work on better information sharing, joint operations, and new tools to disrupt organized crime.
The hope is that better coordination leads to stronger results and safer communities for families throughout Manitoba.
Downtown Winnipeg Sees Record Surge in New Housing Approvals
There’s some encouraging momentum building in the heart of our city.
In 2025, more than 1,040 new housing units were approved in downtown Winnipeg. It marks the highest total in at least 15 years, and possibly the strongest year the city has ever seen.
That’s nearly double the strongest pre-pandemic years and a clear rebound from the post-COVID slowdown.
Here are some of the major projects driving this growth:
Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn at 450 Portage (373 units)
DSM at Donald and St. Mary (160 units)
Shanghai Residence at 232 King (54 units)
City leaders say this surge reflects renewed confidence in downtown, with fewer bottlenecks and faster approvals helping projects move from idea to construction.
Several newly announced projects are expected to add nearly 300 more units in 2026, keeping the momentum going.
More people choosing to live downtown brings more energy to our streets, more support for local shops and restaurants, and more life back into the core of our city.
