Manitoba Just Launched a New Health Website

It’s about time we had a faster way to book doctors’ appointments in Winnipeg. If you’re like me, waiting around at the ER is never fun, so I’m thrilled to see the launch of Medinav.

It’s a new tool from the Manitoba government that simplifies non-urgent appointments and helps keep ER wait times down.

Here’s how it works:

  • Create an account using your Manitoba Health Card

  • Tap Book an Appointment

  • Type in how you’re feeling and why you need to see a doctor

  • The app shows you available time slots across different clinics, so you can pick what works best (and has the shortest wait times)

It’s perfect for busy folks who can’t spare a whole day in a waiting room. Give it a try and see how simple healthcare can be for us Winnipeggers.

Winnipeg Starts Citywide Spring Cleanup!

The annual cleanup kicked off yesterday (Sunday, April 13), and over the next six weeks, crews will be sweeping roads and sidewalks across the city to get everything ready for summer.

A few things to look out for:

  • Check the link below for daily updates and parking restrictions

  • If you see “no parking” signs, please move your vehicle to avoid a $150 ticket

  • Yard waste collection begins April 28 for Area A and May 5 for Area B

To help our crews, please don’t rake yard waste or debris onto the street, as it can block drains and cause flooding. Instead, place it on the curb once yard waste collection starts. Let’s all do our part to help Winnipeg shine this spring!

Winnipeg Police Runs Don’t Drive High Campaign

Source: Winnipeg.ca

We all love driving around Winnipeg (despite the potholes, haha), and part of what makes our city feel like home is how we look out for each other. That’s why the Winnipeg Police teamed up with MPI from January to March 2025 to focus on drivers under the influence of cannabis and other drugs to keep our roads safe.

Here’s what they discovered:

  • Officers made 302 traffic stops and performed 207 drug screening tests

  • Out of those tested, 97 drivers (that’s almost half) had recently used cannabis

  • A total of 86 Provincial Offence Act notices were given for issues like improper storage or use of cannabis in vehicles

Driving under the influence can lead to serious legal consequences, but more importantly, it puts everyone at risk. So, let’s keep caring for each other, Winnipeg, and if you’ve been using any substances, please find a safe ride.

It’s not just about keeping yourself safe, it’s about looking out for everyone in our community.

Celebrating Manitoba’s Outstanding Teachers

It’s always great to see local teachers getting the spotlight they deserve. This year, nine amazing educators were honored with Manitoba’s Excellence in Education Awards, and it’s easy to see why. They’re the ones igniting curiosity in the classroom—whether they’re guiding little ones just starting school or mentoring teenagers getting ready for life’s next steps.

Here’s what stood out about this year’s awards:

  • Several categories celebrated different teaching strengths, including Teaching Excellence and Outstanding School Leader

  • A Premier’s Award for Excellence went to one truly outstanding educator

  • With a big focus on teaching styles that help students grow both academically and emotionally

By sparking creativity and building real connections, these educators show us the power of a caring mentor. With Manitoba investing in high-quality teaching, we can look forward to even more ways to help every student learn and grow!

Manitoba Introduces Universal Early Reading Screening

Building on that momentum, the Manitoba government is also rolling out universal early reading screening to ensure no child falls through the cracks. Starting with a pilot in fall 2025 and full implementation by 2026, this program will help teachers catch any reading challenges for students in kindergarten to Grade 4.

Some key details:

  • All students in these grades will be screened in the early fall for three consecutive years

  • A second screening in the spring is optional for those who meet benchmarks

  • Reliable, evidence-based tools will identify kids at risk of reading difficulties, including dyslexia

By spotting issues early on, this initiative makes sure every young learner has the support they need. It’s meant to catch anything early and ensure no student is left behind, setting them up for success both in and out of the classroom.
