Manitoba New Emergency Info Site

Happy Monday, Winnipeggers!

There’s a lot happening around the city this week, from markets and concerts to community events that’ll keep you busy every day if you let them. And thankfully, the air quality’s looking a lot better than it was last week.

The index is sitting at around 5 today, which puts us in the moderate risk zone, a big improvement from the 10+ readings we saw during the worst of the smoke. It’s still worth being mindful if you’re sensitive to air quality, but overall, it’s a good sign for anyone planning to spend more time outside this week.

So whether you’re easing into the week or jumping right into plans, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know.

In today’s edition:

  • New Costco Coming to West St. Paul

  • Manitoba Launches New Emergency Info Site

  • The EX Kicks Off This Weekend

  • Restaurant of the Week

  • Zoning Changes Approved to Help Tackle Housing Shortage

  • Multiple events this week & more

New Costco Coming to West St. Paul

Source: Red River Planning

Sometimes it feels like everything’s just a little too far away. Especially when you're trying to grab groceries, fill up on gas, or pick up some last-minute birthday cake.

Well, that might be changing soon for folks in West St. Paul.

A new Costco on Meadowland Drive is proposed, and the community is being asked to weigh in before any decisions are made.

Here’s what’s planned:

  • A 162,000 sq. ft. store with a tire and auto centre, seasonal garden centre, and gas station

  • 16 fuel pumps and service bays for tire changes and more

  • The garden centre would pop up in the parking lot during spring and summer

And here’s where you come in:

  • A public hearing is happening June 12 at 6 p.m. at the West St. Paul council office on Main Street

  • With the Council voting after the hearing

This would be one of two new stores in the works. The other is already under construction near the Red River Ex grounds and will become Manitoba’s 4th Costco when it opens later this year.

So, if you live near West St. Paul, this is your chance to speak up! A store like this could bring a lot more convenience to the area with less driving, quicker errands, and everything a little closer to home.

Manitoba Launches New Emergency Info Site

When emergencies happen, whether it’s smoke in the air, wildfires up north, or flooding down south, most of us just want to know what’s going on and what to do next.

That’s why the Manitoba government just launched MB Ready, a new website built to keep people across the province informed during tough times.

Here’s what it’s meant to help with:

  • Gives up-to-date info on wildfires, floods, and other emergencies

  • Shares what supports are available if you’re affected

  • Helps people know where to turn during evacuations or major disruptions

  • It’s run by the Emergency Management Organization, which coordinates the province’s emergency response

The site’s still growing, and new tools and updates will be added over the next few months to make it even more useful.

It’s not something you’ll need every day, but when things take a turn, it’s good to know there’s now one place you can check for clear answers.

City Updates

Zoning Changes Approved to Help Tackle Housing Shortage

It’s no secret, it’s getting harder and harder to find an affordable place to live in Winnipeg. With over 70,000 new residents in just three years, the city’s been growing faster than housing can keep up.

But this week, the City Council approved some of the biggest zoning changes we’ve seen in decades.

The goal? Make it easier to build the kinds of homes Winnipeggers need and unlock over $450 million in federal funding tied to housing, infrastructure, and transit.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • Property owners can now build up to four units on any residential lot across the city

  • Buildings up to four storeys are allowed near frequent transit routes (within 800 metres), no public hearing needed if they meet design standards

  • The changes fast-track development, which could help bring down housing costs and increase options

  • While also qualifying Winnipeg for major funding from the Housing Accelerator Fund and other federal programs

The changes came after 18 months of consultation and a four-day public hearing. And while not everyone agreed on every detail, this plan is still a step forward in giving more people a chance to find a home, without waiting years for approvals.

New Spray Pad Opens at Bronx Park

There’s something special about a neighbourhood splash pad. It’s where kids make their first summer memories, where parents get a minute to breathe, and where neighbours end up bumping into each other more often.

And now, families in Elmwood – East Kildonan and North Kildonan have a brand new place to do just that.

A brand new, 3,000-square-foot accessible spray pad just opened at Bronx Park Community Centre (720 Henderson Hwy), and it’s already becoming a bright spot in the community.

Here’s what was added:

  • A bright, fully accessible spray pad with space for all ages

  • New benches, picnic tables, pathways, and shaded seating

  • A bike rack, water fountain, and fresh landscaping throughout

The spray pad is part of a $1 million upgrade that brought new life to the park, making it more welcoming and easier for families to enjoy.

With the hot days ahead, be sure to take your kids, grandkids, or nieces and nephews for a visit. It’s a great way to spend time outside and make some summer memories close to home.
