News
Extreme Cold Warning for Manitoba
Friday was a tough day for our city and all of southern Manitoba. A blizzard swept through, causing over 50 crashes on icy highways, with near-zero visibility making driving impossible.
In Winnipeg, even Fermor Avenue turned chaotic with a pileup involving 20 vehicles. If you or someone you know was involved, I truly hope everyone made it out safe.
As if that wasn’t enough, the cold hasn’t eased up. Extreme cold warnings are in place, with temperatures going as low as -30°C. So, If you’re heading out, bundle up and keep trips short.
The good news is that next week should bring some relief, with temperatures rising to a slightly friendlier -10 to -15°C.

Here’s what you can do to stay safe:
Stay indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Check on loved ones: Especially older neighbors or relatives who may need extra support.
Watch for hypothermia signs: Shivering, stiff muscles, or confusion are red flags—seek help immediately.
Bring pets inside: They feel the cold too!
If you’re out and see someone struggling, call 9-1-1. Let’s keep our city safe and warm, one small act at a time.

Manitoba Offers Hope to Gaza Family
A Palestinian child and his mother arrived in Winnipeg last week and were greeted by Premier Wab Kinew at the airport. The boy, suffering from complex medical needs, couldn’t get the care he needed back home due to the ongoing war. Now, thanks to a coordinated effort involving Doctors Without Borders and local support, his journey to recovery has begun.
As reported by CHVN Radio, Premier Wab Kinew captured the heart of this effort, saying, “We are responding to the humanitarian crisis by helping this child get the health care they need. Throughout Manitoba’s history, we have welcomed those fleeing violence to the beautiful province we are lucky to call home. There will always be people around the world willing to help people who need it, and those are Manitobans.”
Here’s why this moment is so important:
War’s toll: The boy is one of countless children in Gaza whose lives have been upended by conflict, leaving them without access to critical medical care.
A rare opportunity: He’s one of only two children fast-tracked to Canada, made possible through collaboration with Doctors Without Borders.
Community support: Manitobans, including groups like the Manitoba Islamic Association, are rallying to help with housing, paperwork, and basic needs.
This story reminds us why it’s essential to act when others are in need. Politics aside, it’s about shared humanity and ensuring everyone gets a chance at a better life. Let’s keep showing the world that Manitoba’s kindness knows no borders. 💙

City Update
A Step Toward Ending Homelessness
As mentioned a few editions ago, the provincial government has introduced a plan to tackle chronic homelessness in Manitoba, aiming to end it by 2031.
The strategy, called “Your Way Home,” focuses on moving people from encampments into housing within a 30-day period. This doesn’t mean homelessness will be solved overnight, but it’s a detailed approach to provide long-term solutions.
Here’s a bit more about the program:
A housing ladder: People will transition through a pathway from social housing to affordable rentals and, eventually, market-based housing.
300 new units: The province has purchased 300 social housing units, working with non-profits to offer support services, food, and housekeeping.
Encampment transitions: Sites will only be decommissioned after everyone has secured housing, ensuring no one is left behind.
Wraparound care: Additional funding will help individuals access the resources they need to succeed in stable housing.
This is a collaborative effort involving the city, non-profits, and the province. It’s about creating dignity and hope, one step at a time. Let’s keep the momentum going for meaningful change.
RRC Polytech Gets Free Laptops
Access to education shouldn’t depend on access to technology, and RRC Polytech is breaking that barrier. Thanks to Lenovo, students in the Pathway programs received free laptops, setting them up for success in their studies and beyond.
Here’s why this matters:
Breaking barriers: Many students couldn’t afford a laptop, and now they’re equipped to handle assignments and projects with confidence.
Beyond the classroom: The laptops are theirs to keep, making a lasting impact as they pursue their careers.
Indigenous focus: The Pathway programs are tailored to support Indigenous learners, ensuring they have meaningful opportunities for success.
This is the second time Lenovo has stepped in to help, showing how partnerships can create long-lasting change. And with RRC Polytech waiving application fees for Indigenous learners throughout January, it’s another step forward for our community!

Winnipeg’s Time Capsule for the Future
Winnipeg’s 150th celebrations wrapped up with something truly special: the sealing of a time capsule that won’t be opened until the city’s 200th anniversary in 2074.
This capsule is more than a collection of items—it’s a snapshot of Winnipeg as it is today, a gift for future generations to reflect on and learn from.
Here’s what’s inside and why it matters:
The contents: Letters from dignitaries, documentation of Winnipeg 150 events, and other keepsakes capturing this milestone year.
A legacy for the future: The time capsule is part of the broader Winnipeg 150 legacy project, which includes the redevelopment of the City Archives Building. This space, supported by over $12 million in funding, will ensure Winnipeg’s history is preserved and accessible for generations to come.
Purpose: It’s about connecting the past, present, and future. The capsule shows how far we’ve come while laying the foundation for growth and reconciliation moving forward.
This isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about building a Winnipeg we can all be proud of, today and tomorrow!
