Manitoba Releases New License Plate
Happy Monday, Winnipeggers!
The heat stuck around all weekend, and if you stepped outside, you definitely felt it. It’s supposed to cool down this week, with a chance of much-needed rain today, maybe even as you're reading this!
But with that said, please keep an eye on the air quality index. It’s sitting at 10+ right now, which means we’re in the very high-risk zone. And if it stays like this, please try to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and make sure kids and elderly folks take it easy too. The smoke is in the air, and it’s best to limit your time outside whenever you can.
So maybe take it easy today, stay indoors if you can, and we’ll help you get caught up on what’s new around Winnipeg.

Wildfire Update: What You Need to Know

Source: Chris Kepron / Canadian Red Cross
These updates might start to feel a little repetitive, but with everything going on across the province, it’s one of those moments where staying informed really matters.
Thousands of families are still displaced. Fires are still growing. And with hot, dry weather in the forecast, this is a key time for all of us to be a little more careful, a little more kind, and a little more community-minded.
Here’s the latest update:
25 wildfires are still burning across Manitoba, with over 100 fires so far this season, well above the usual average.
Manitoba remains in a province-wide state of emergency, and evacuation orders are in effect for several northern communities. (Places like Bisset, Cross Lake, Lynn Lake, and more)
Over 8,900 people have been evacuated and registered with the Red Cross, with many staying in shelters across Winnipeg, Thompson, Winkler, and Portage.
Level 3 fire restrictions are in place, including a full burn ban and no backcountry travel without a permit.
Support is also pouring in from across Canada, with extra crews helping fight the fires and evacuate those at risk.
It’s tough seeing so many Manitobans go through this right now, but at the same time, it’s also one of those moments where you really see how much we care about each other. When things get hard, we show up. We always do.
And if you or someone you know needs a place to stay, maybe a friend, a neighbour, or someone in the community, the reception centre at Billy Mosienko Arena (709 Keewatin St) is open 24/7 and ready to help however they can.
So we’ll keep sharing these updates, even if they feel a little familiar. Because the more we know, the better we can look out for each other.
P.S. If you want to support or donate to help, the Canadian Red Cross is accepting donations to assist those impacted by the wildfires. Your support will go toward immediate and ongoing relief, like financial assistance for evacuees, help for host communities, recovery efforts, and future disaster preparedness right here in Manitoba.

Restaurant of the Week: Siam Authentic Thai Cuisine

Source: Siam Authentic Thai Cuisine
Siam Thai might just be the most well-known Thai spot in the city, with over 600 Google reviews and a 4.2+ star rating. But somehow, it still feels like a hidden gem. Tucked quietly along St. Anne’s Road, it’s the kind of place you’d probably miss if you didn’t already know about it. But once you walk in, you’ll be glad you found it.
The space is calm and low-key, with soft music and subtle decor that lets the food do all the talking. And it does. Every dish is packed with bold flavours, from the rich curries to the stir-fries that come out sizzling.
Located at 📍587 St Anne's Rd, Winnipeg, MB
🕒 It’s open every day:
Monday to Thursday: 11:30 AM – 8:30 PM
Friday: 11:30 AM – 9:00 PM
Saturday: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Sunday: 3:00 PM – 8:30 PM
And here’s something not many people know: Siam is also the only Thai restaurant in Winnipeg to receive the Thai Select Premium certification. A rare seal of approval given directly by the Royal Thai Government.
It’s not just a fancy title. It means their recipes, ingredients, and preparation methods are as close to Thailand as it gets. With only nine restaurants across all of Canada having earned it.

A New Manitoba Licence Plate with a Purpose

You know those moments that just feel so Manitoba? This past weekend was one of them.
Over 1,200 riders hit the road for the 17th annual Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad, raising over $600,000 to support prostate cancer research and education, bringing the event’s lifetime total to a massive $5.7 million raised right here in Manitoba.
But this year, they rolled out something extra special:
MPI unveiled a new Ride for Dad specialty licence plate to support the cause.
Each plate costs $70, with $30 going directly to the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Plates will be available for both cars and motorcycles starting July 14 at all MPI Service Centres and Autopac brokers across the province.
It’s a small way to show support that goes a long way. Whether you ride or not, grabbing one of these plates helps fund care, research, and support for Manitobans facing prostate cancer.
So if you’ve been thinking of getting a new plate, maybe this is the one. As it’s more than just a piece of metal, it’s a small way to carry hope with you, wherever you go.
City Updates
Louise Bridge Closure Extended 'Til End of July
If traffic’s been feeling a bit more backed up than usual, or your usual route to Elmwood has taken a detour, this might be why. The Louise Bridge, which closed on May 23 for its annual inspection, will now stay closed longer than expected.
Crews found some corrosion during the inspection, and they need more time to make sure the repairs are done right. It’s not the best news for summer travel, but it’s about keeping the bridge safe for everyone.
Here’s what to know:
The bridge will remain closed to vehicles until the end of July
It’s still open to pedestrians and cyclists, though access may be temporarily restricted during certain parts of the work
Drivers are being asked to take alternate routes, like Disraeli or Provencher and give themselves a little extra time
It’s a bit of an inconvenience, especially for folks who rely on that route every day. But if it keeps the bridge in good shape and everyone safe, it’s worth it.

Measles Cases Rise, With New Exposure Sites in Winnipeg
It’s been three months since the first measles case was confirmed in Manitoba, and cases are still climbing. What started as just one has now reached 72 confirmed cases, and public health is now reporting some of the latest infections have no known connection to earlier ones.
That’s the part that’s got officials concerned. The virus may be spreading more quietly than expected, and new exposure sites keep popping up.
Here’s what to know:
Recent exposure sites in Winnipeg include Riverwood Church (May 23), McPhillips Medical Clinic (May 25), and Dynacare Lab (May 26)
Other sites include a Best Western pool in Portage la Prairie, McDonald’s, and several medical centres in Winkler
Symptoms may not appear for up to three weeks, and can include fever, cough, and a red blotchy rash
Measles spreads through the air and is especially dangerous for young kids and those not vaccinated
If you think you’ve been exposed or someone in your household is at risk, public health asks that you stay home, monitor symptoms, and call Health Links for next steps.
So if you want to stay up to date and avoid missing new sites or safety tips, click the link below for the latest information.
