Manitoba's Job Guide for Students
Midweek check-in, Winnipeg!
It’s not even June yet, but summer is in full swing!
We’re heading into a serious heat wave this week, with temps climbing day by day and expected to hit 33°C by Sunday. That’s one of the hottest days we’ve seen all year, and it’s still technically spring.
So if you’re planning to be out and about — lake days, patios, backyard hangouts — just make sure to take care of yourself.
Sunscreen and water go a long way
Keep a hat close and stay out of the midday sun if you can
And if you’re using a fire pit or heading to the cottage, check local fire advisories first. The dry weather means fire risk is climbing fast across southern Manitoba
That said, the skies are clear, the UV is high, and there’s plenty of good reason to be outside this week.
We’ve as always, rounded up a bunch of new events and things to do. With Friday’s full weekend guide being even more packed.
For now, stay cool, stay safe, and enjoy this little early gift from summer.
In today’s edition:
Manitoba's Summer Job Guide for Students
Winnipeg’s May Most Wanted List
Support for Manitobans Living with Dementia
City Launches Police Feedback Survey
Multiple events this week & more

Reminder: No Pets in Hot Cars

Source: Winnipeg Animal Services
We know how tempting it is to bring your dog along for a quick run to the store, but with temperatures climbing over 22°C this week, it’s just not worth the risk. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be dangerous for our little friends.
Winnipeg’s Responsible Pet Ownership By-law was updated in 2022 to help prevent exactly that.
And here’s what it says:
Pets can’t be left alone in vehicles if it’s 22°C or warmer or -10°C or colder
Unless the vehicle is running with proper air conditioning or heating
Cycling with your dog isn’t allowed above 22°C either, as hot pavement and heat exhaustion are real risks for our four-legged buddies!
So, let’s keep our furry friends safe, cool, and comfortable this week. As they’d rather wait for you at home with the fan on and a bowl of cold water. Instead of sitting in a hot car!

Together with Cleanr Property Maintenance

The Summer Lawn Trick Most People Skip
It’s the start of summer, the grass is growing fast, and if you’re anything like most of us, your lawn’s probably looking a little rough around the edges.
That’s where top dressing comes in.
It’s one of those lesser-known lawn care tricks that can make a big difference. A quick layer of compost or soil helps even things out, boosts growth, and gives your yard the nutrients it needs to thrive all season long.
But here’s the best part: you don’t have to do any of it yourself.
Cleanr is our trusted landscaping and lawn maintenance partner.
And they do everything:
Top dressing
Weekly mowing and lawn care
Weed control and fertilizer
Full landscaping projects, yard cleanups and more!
We partnered with them because they actually know Winnipeg lawns. Their team works with the weather and soil we’ve got, not against it.
And they back it all with a 200% guarantee:
If you're not 100% satisfied, they’ll come back and do it again, free of charge. Still not happy? They’ll even pay a competitor to make it right. That’s how confident they are in what they do.
So if you’ve got work to do in your yard this summer, click below to see everything they offer. Whether you need a quick one time installation or year-round help, Cleanr’s got you covered!

Community Spotlight

Helping Keep Our City Safe, Quietly
We don’t cover crime much in this community, and that’s on purpose. But staying safe also means staying aware.
That’s why we want to highlight the quiet but important work of Winnipeg Crime Stoppers. Since 1984, they’ve collected over 123,000 anonymous tips, helping solve cases and protect our communities.
One of the most helpful tools they share is their monthly Most Wanted list. It’s not there to scare anyone, but just to help you stay informed.
Take a quick look so you know if someone dangerous might be in your area
Share it with your neighbours or loved ones to help keep kids and families safe
We won’t go into details here, but if you want to see the full May 2025 list, click the link below and help do your part in keeping our community safe!

City Launches Police Feedback Survey
Whether you walk to work, ride the bus, or raise your kids here, feeling safe in your own community matters. And right now, the Winnipeg Police Board is asking for your help to guide what that safety looks like in the years ahead.
They’ve launched a public survey to help shape their 2026 to 2030 strategic plan, and they’re looking for honest feedback from Winnipeggers.
The survey asks about:
How much do you trust the Winnipeg Police Service?
What priorities do you think should come first?
And the kind of role police should play in public safety
It’s a small thing, but your voice could help shape real change. So, let’s help build a Winnipeg that reflects our values and feels safe for everyone who calls it home.

New Outdoor Fitness Space Coming to South St. Vital
If you live in South St. Vital or have kids at École Christine-Lespérance, there’s some good news for your summer walks and fall routines.
Construction just started on a big upgrade to John Forsyth Park, and once it’s done, it’s going to be so much more than just green space.
Here’s what’s coming:
Outdoor fitness equipment for all ages
A paved path for walking, biking, and rolling
A brand-new outdoor classroom, designed with input from the school next door, and more
It’s all about creating space for the community to move, connect, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re out with the kids, walking with a neighbour, or just looking for a quiet moment in the fresh air, this park will be ready for it.
In total, it’s an $859,000 investment, with support from all levels of government:
$250,000 from the City
$200,000 from the federal government
$300,000 from the Province, plus multiple grants
Work is expected to wrap up by August 2025, just in time for back-to-school. So come next fall, expect a park that’s ready to welcome everyone.

Support for Manitobans Living with Dementia

Source: Alzheimer Society of Canada
When someone you love is living with dementia, the little things like familiar faces, routines, and nearby support mean everything.
And if you know someone who has dementia, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
That’s why this new funding from the province hits close to the heart.
The Manitoba government just added $200,000 in new funding for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, bringing their total funding up to $888,000. Helping people stay connected to their communities while receiving the care they need at home.
This new support will help:
Train staff who work closely with people living with dementia
Build more Dementia-Friendly Communities across Manitoba
And strengthen local support through new community coordinators
It’s a reminder that care doesn’t always mean hospitals or long drives. Sometimes it just means helping people feel safe where they already are.
