Manitoba’s New $1 Billion Cancer Centre Is Finally Happening

Source: CancerCare Manitoba
Some stories hit close to home. Cancer has touched almost every family in Winnipeg, including mine. And for years, our province has needed a better space to care for folks going through the toughest fight of their lives.
And that’s finally happening:
Manitoba is moving ahead with a brand new $1 billion CancerCare centre, right on the Health Sciences Centre campus.
New facility: A 162,000 sq ft building beside the 2003 clinic. More exam rooms, larger treatment areas, and modern research labs.
The new space will bring together clinical trials, diagnostics, patient care, and cancer research, all under one roof
It’ll be brighter, bigger, and built for the future, with room for modern tools and better patient comfort
Construction starts in August 2026, with the province already setting aside money in Budget 2025 to kick things off. Anticipated to open by 2030, this centre aims to set a national standard and attract top experts to Winnipeg.
After years of delays, this is a huge step forward for Manitoba families who deserve world-class care right here at home.

Manitoba Asks Tourists to Pause Travel
It’s been a heavy few weeks in Manitoba. With wildfires still burning and thousands of people forced to leave their homes, the province is stepping up to make sure everyone has a safe place to stay, and that means making room wherever we can.
Right now, Manitoba is asking folks across the country to hold off on non-essential travel so those displaced have a roof over their heads.
Around 21,000 people have been evacuated from 27 different communities.
The province is responding to 29 active wildfires, already way above the seasonal average.
Reception centres have been set up in Winnipeg, Brandon, and Thompson.
With four emergency shelters now open, and hotel rooms across Manitoba are being prioritized for evacuees.
Tourism is a huge part of our province’s economy, and this wasn’t an easy ask for the government to make. But right now, it’s about taking care of our neighbours first, many of whom left home with little to nothing.
So, if you’ve got family visiting or had local trips planned, maybe hold off a little while longer. Let’s give folks who need it most the space to rest, recover, and feel safe.

$60M Plans Revealed to Revive Pantages Theatre

Source: NUMBER TEN ARCHITECTURAL GROUP
It’s not every day you get to bring a piece of history back to life. But that’s exactly what’s in the works for the old Pantages Theatre. After sitting closed since 2018, the building is finally getting the love it deserves.
As reported by the Winnipeg Free Press, the Performing Arts Consortium of Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra have unveiled their plans to restore and modernize the iconic space.
The new design includes a deeper stage, an orchestra pit, and better sightlines
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will be the main tenant, using it for both rehearsals and concerts
The space will be shared with other arts groups, opening up more opportunities for local performances
The design will preserve the historic charm while adding much-needed updates to HVAC, rigging, and accessibility
The total cost is expected to hit $55 to $60 million, with half coming from government support and the rest from private fundraising.
It’s a big project. But one that could bring life, music, and memories back to a space that means so much to Winnipeg’s arts community.
