West St Paul’s New Costco Is Officially Being Built

For years, West St. Paul residents heard that Costco was coming and wondered when construction would start.

Now there are bulldozers and a crane on Meadowlands Drive to prove it.

Crews have broken ground on a nearly 162,000-square-foot Costco, with doors expected to open in August 2027.

Alongside everything you'd expect from Costco:

  • An eight-lane gas bar

  • A tire centre and food court

  • A seasonal outdoor garden centre

  • More than 1,000 parking spaces

Costco won't be arriving alone either. New homes are going up around the growing Meadowlands neighbourhood, with a Gill's Supermarket and another commercial strip planned nearby.

After years of wondering, residents can finally watch it happen. And for shoppers north of Winnipeg, a much shorter Costco run is on the way.

Together with Lilax!

You've Been Meaning to Learn How to Sew

There's a pile of clothes in your closet you'd wear if they fit right. A jacket you like too much to give away. Pants that have been an inch too long for three years.

You've thought about fixing them yourself. Then you think about where you'd even start, and the thought goes away again.

That's the part Lilax Studio handles.

They start you at your first stitch and stay with you until you're the one people bring their projects to. Show up with no experience or twenty years of it. Doesn't matter.

Here's what they have:

  • Classes and workshops, first stitch through to advanced

  • Sewing kits with everything in the box, start the same day

  • Patterns, fabric and notions for whatever you decide to make

  • Machines and studio space you can book by the hour

You don't even need a machine of your own.

Maybe there's a project sitting half-finished. Maybe you just want a hobby with something to show for it, and a skill you keep for life. Either way, they've got something for you.

University of Winnipeg's Wesmen Just Beat a Division 1 NCAA Team

If you've ever wondered how much basketball talent Winnipeg actually has, the Wesmen just gave you your answer.

The University of Winnipeg's men's team beat the NCAA Division I South Dakota Coyotes 80 to 65, holding the lead for most of the game.

Here's who powered the upset:

  • Elijah Mensah scored 28 points

  • Kato Jaro added 21 points and seven assists

  • The team knocked down 12 three-pointers

Division I is the highest level of university basketball in the States, which is what makes this one stand out.

It was only an exhibition, so it won't count in the standings. But with the Canada West season coming up, the Wesmen just showed they can go toe to toe with a major American program.

City Updates

Winnipeg’s Second UNIQLO Opens Today

If you've shopped UNIQLO before, you already know why people go. The basics actually last, and the prices don't make you think twice.

Winnipeg's second store opens today at St. Vital Centre, doors at 10 a.m.

Get there earlier than that:

  • Free strawberry-matcha crullers from Crumb Queen and matcha lattes starting at 9:10 a.m., for the first 300 people

  • Taiko drummers playing through the morning

  • Opening prices run through Sunday

There are a few more opening-day offers on top of those.

The store's open until 9 p.m., but the giveaways run while supplies last. Check the full list before you leave so you know exactly what’s worth heading straight for.

For Four Days, Winnipeg Gets Factory Prices

Everyone has the drawer. Knives that don't cut anymore. A pan with the coating flaking off. A lid that belongs to nothing.

Here's the fix, and it has a date on it.

Zwilling's Factory Direct Sale comes to Winnipeg for the first time, running Thursday, August 27 to Sunday, August 30 at the RBC Convention Centre.

The company has been making knives in the same German town since 1731, and these are the knives professional kitchens buy. For four days they sell them straight from the maker, with no store in the middle.

Here's what that looks like:

  • An 11 inch Zwilling frypan for $25, down from $99.99

  • A two-piece Zwilling knife set for $40, down from $114.99

  • Zwilling, Staub, Miyabi, Demeyere and Henckels in one room, from single knives to full cookware sets

Spend $250 before tax and you take home a free two-piece Zwilling non-stick cookware set. Quantities are limited on that one.

You'll find them in the South Building, Hall D at 375 York Ave, open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

The best deals go early, so if you can only make one day, make it Thursday.
