Manitoba Launches Survey To End Seasonal Time Changes

Source: Engage Manitoba

Twice a year, we all go through the same routine: clocks forward, clocks back, a week of tired mornings, and a lot of complaints about when the sun goes down.

Now, Manitoba is officially asking residents what they want to happen next.

The province has launched a public survey asking Manitobans whether they want to:

  • Keep changing the clocks twice a year

  • Switch to permanent standard time with earlier sunrises

  • Or move to permanent daylight time with brighter evenings

The feedback will directly shape what the province decides moving forward, especially as more provinces across Canada start rethinking the twice-a-year clock change too.

A few places have already made moves in different directions:

  • Alberta, B.C., and the Northwest Territories have all moved toward permanent daylight time

  • Saskatchewan has used permanent standard time for years, meaning earlier sunrises year-round

Manitoba Health also recently found that getting rid of the time change altogether would likely be better for overall population health than keeping things the way they are now.

The survey is now open and only takes a few minutes to complete.

A Message From The European Union Short Film Festival

Four Days of Free European Cinema in Winnipeg

You don't get many chances to watch European films on a big screen in Winnipeg.

This month, you get four screenings.

And all 27 films are completely free.

The European Union Short Film Festival is making its Winnipeg debut from May 23 to 26 at the Dave Barber Cinémathèque, with four nights of free screenings featuring films from across Europe.

Each night is curated a little differently, so you’ll see a mix of drama, comedy, documentary, animation, and shorter stories that are hard to find anywhere else.

Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • 27 short films from a wide range of European countries

  • 4 curated screening nights, each with its own lineup and feel

  • 100% free, nothing to pay at the door, registration required to save your spot!

And for the first time, Winnipeg is one of only four Canadian cities hosting the festival.

So whether you’re into film or just looking for something different to do, this is one of those events that feels a little special to stumble into.

Spots are limited, so it's worth reserving your FREE tickets ahead of time!

P.S. This is a great one to drop into your group chats and turn into a night out!

Another Measles Exposure Reported at HSC Children's Hospital

Manitoba Health has confirmed a measles exposure took place in the emergency department waiting room and minor treatment areas at Health Sciences Centre Children's Hospital, 700 William Ave. between 1:05 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. on May 14.

Anyone who was there during those hours is being asked to check their immunization records and watch for symptoms.

Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Monitor for symptoms (fever, runny nose, red eyes, rash) until June 5

  • If you were born in 1970 or later and have never been vaccinated or had measles, a vaccine is recommended

  • Reduce contact with others, especially anyone immunocompromised or unvaccinated, from day five through day 21 after exposure

So if you were at HSC that morning, please check your status and share this with anyone who may have been there too.

Winnipeg Is Updating Its Climate Action Plan and Wants Your Input

The City of Winnipeg is updating its Climate Action Plan and wants to hear from the people who live here.

As things like extreme heat, flooding, and heavy storms become more common, the city is working to plan ahead rather than simply react.

The updated plan will focus on lowering emissions, protecting infrastructure, and finding practical ways to help Winnipeg adapt to a changing climate.

A few things to know about the process:

  • The survey is open until Sunday, June 28, 2026

  • The city is also working alongside Indigenous Rights Holders, equity groups, and climate experts to help shape the final plan

  • The updated plan is expected to be complete by late 2027

If you have noticed changes in Winnipeg's weather over the years, or just have thoughts on where the city should be focusing its energy, this is a good opportunity to share that.

City Updates

Construction Starts on Winnipeg's New $127.5M Recreation Campus

Source: Engage Winnipeg

All three levels of government officially broke ground this week on the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus, a $127.5 million multi-use facility built for one of the fastest-growing parts of the city.

The campus is designed to serve the whole community, from young kids in childcare to adults looking for a place to stay active and connect with neighbours.

Here’s what’s coming when it opens in early 2028:

  • Gymnasiums, multipurpose rooms, an indoor walking and running track, and a full fitness area

  • A childcare centre with space for up to 176 children

  • A cafe, serving kitchen, and outdoor spray pad

  • A vocational wing added to Pembina Trails Collegiate, funded by the province

  • Expected to serve upwards of 120,000 residents once open

And there’s even more on the horizon.

Phase 2, which includes a planned aquatic facility, is already in the early design stages with public engagement set for 2027.

This is the kind of investment that shapes a neighbourhood for generations, and for the families already calling South Winnipeg home, it’s a sign that the city is growing right alongside them.

Manitoba Small Businesses Encouraged to Apply for New Growth Grant

If you run a small business in Manitoba and have been sitting on a new idea, this is worth a closer look.

The Manitoba government has reopened applications for the Innovation Growth Program, a funding opportunity designed to help small Manitoba businesses turn innovative ideas into real products and services.

Past recipients have gone on to build companies with over 100 employees right here in the province.

Here’s what to know about eligibility:

  • Must be a Canadian-controlled private corporation with a permanent establishment in Manitoba

  • Annual revenue of $15 million or less, or fewer than 100 full-time equivalent employees

  • A minimum cash equity position of $25,000 in shares or retained earnings

  • Applications are open until June 30, so there’s still time to get started

This kind of support doesn’t come around all the time, and Manitoba is making it clear that they want to see local small businesses succeed and grow.

So if you or someone you know runs a small business with a bold new idea, click the link below to learn more about the program!
