First Miss Indigenous Canada Crowned from Manitoba!

Source: Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Facebook

As reported by CTV News, Manitoba is celebrating a new star! Jessica McKenzie from Opaskwayak Cree Nation has been crowned the very first Miss Indigenous Canada after a three-day event in Ontario.

Jessica’s journey to the crown wasn’t just about beauty—it was about honoring Indigenous traditions, culture, and leadership. Her presentation highlighted her grandfather Murray’s incredible story as a residential school survivor, photographer, trapper, and voice actor.

Jessica’s now on a mission to visit Indigenous communities and inspire youth to embrace their heritage. She believes this title is a spirit that must be nurtured and grown with love and opportunities.

Jessica's passion and excitement are truly inspiring. Congrats, Jessica! 🎉 This is just the beginning of an amazing journey!

Karrot: Your New Favourite Local Marketplace

Three years ago, I almost lost my iPhone 13. After listing it on Facebook Marketplace, thinking it would be a quick, easy sale, I met the buyer. Things went south fast. The buyer tried to snatch the phone and run. Luckily, it was a crowded space, so the buyer couldn’t get away, and I escaped safely. After that, I swore off online marketplaces for good.

But I recently discovered Karrot. Unlike other platforms, Karrot connects you with verified locals in your own neighborhood. With phone number and location verification, every transaction has felt safe and secure. No more sketchy meetups or unreliable buyers.

Karrot just launched in Winnipeg, and to celebrate, they’re offering new users a $5 Tim Hortons gift card for posting their first three items. It’s free to use, with no hidden fees or commissions—just pure community connection.

So if you’re ready to sell safely and meet your neighbors? Join Karrot today and stay safe!

The event will feature a panel of industry pros of Ukrainian descent, sharing their experiences and offering advice. This is a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to learn about the film and TV sector in Manitoba and add valuable skills to their repertoire. Don’t miss it!

Wildfire Smoke Forces Evacuations

As reported by the Canadian Press, several First Nations in northern Manitoba are sending residents south due to wildfire smoke. Red Sucker Lake, Wasagamack, and God's Lake First Nations are relocating about 1,400 vulnerable residents to Winnipeg and Brandon.

While the fire isn’t directly threatening these communities, the smoke poses serious health risks, especially for the elderly, young children, and those with respiratory issues. If you see anyone who has recently moved here, be sure to offer a friendly smile and a warm welcome. Our community is here to support them during this tough time. Stay safe, everyone!
