Canada Warns Against Travel To 10 Middle East Countries

Source: Winnipeg Airport Authorities

We usually don’t dive into national or international news. But when something affects our community’s safety, it’s important to share.

If you haven’t been following, conflict in the Middle East has escalated over the past few days, including strikes involving Iran and Israel. Because of this, the situation in the region is changing quickly.

And due to the growing conflict, Global Affairs Canada is now urging Canadians to avoid all travel to 10 countries in the Middle East.

The countries listed under “avoid all travel” include:

  • Iran

  • Israel

  • Bahrain

  • Iraq

  • Kuwait

  • Lebanon

  • Qatar

  • Syria

  • United Arab Emirates

  • Yemen

There are also warnings in place for Jordan, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, with advice to avoid non-essential travel.

This is an uncertain time. Flights are being cancelled, routes are changing, and the government says help for Canadians in the region may be limited while the conflict continues.

If you have travel plans in the region, or even a layover, double check the latest government updates before you go. Focus on your safety first, and make sure someone close to you knows your plans.

And if you or someone you know is travelling soon, click below to review the latest updates, what’s recommended, and what Canada is advising right now.

City Updates

New French Middle School Opening in St. Boniface

A new French language middle school will open this fall in St. Boniface, giving local families more access to education in French.

The Manitoba government and the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine are opening the school at 261 Youville St., in a building that previously operated as a private school.

The new space will welcome up to 375 students, with classes beginning September 11.

Demand for French language education across Manitoba has been growing quickly, and this new school helps create more room for students closer to home.

Located in St. Boniface, one of the cultural centres of French Manitoba, the school will support middle school students while strengthening the francophone community in the neighbourhood.

If you know a family who may be interested in French language education, you can learn more about the new school at the link below.

New Manitoba Law Lets You Check A Partner’s History Of Violence

If you’re entering a new relationship or feeling unsure about your safety in one, Manitoba has introduced a new law designed to help.

Starting March 1, Manitobans can apply under a new provincial program that allows someone to request information about a current or former intimate partner’s known history of violence. The goal is to help people make informed decisions and access support earlier.

The program also connects applicants with resources and guidance, not just information.

Here’s what to know:

  • You can apply if you’re concerned about your safety with a current or former partner

  • A parent, guardian, or legal representative can apply on someone’s behalf

  • The process includes a private intake meeting, risk assessment, and safety planning

  • Any approved disclosure is shared confidentially and verbally

Applications can be submitted online, by email, by phone, or in person at 379 Broadway in Winnipeg.

For anyone who feels unsure about their safety in a relationship, this program offers a way to ask questions and access support before a situation becomes more serious.

City Of Winnipeg Launches New Online Portal To Track Council Decisions

Source: City Of Winnipeg

The City of Winnipeg has launched a new online system that makes it easier for residents to find and follow decisions coming out of City Hall.

The new Decision Making Information System, or DMIS, replaces the old platform that had been in place for nearly 25 years. It brings decades of council records into one updated, easier-to-use site.

Here’s what you can now do:

  • Search reports, agendas, and meeting minutes more easily

  • Set reminders to follow specific agenda items as they move through committees

  • Register to speak or submit written comments online

The system is mobile friendly and built to meet accessibility standards, making it simpler to stay informed on any device.

For anyone who wants to understand what’s being discussed at City Hall or have a say in local decisions, this makes the process much more straightforward.
