Power Outage at Red River College

Source: RRC Polytech

As you know, it’s been raining and gloomy for the past few days, and yesterday, it caused a power outage at RRC Polytech’s Notre Dame Campus. Classes were canceled, and Manitoba Hydro is working to restore the power as I’m writing this.

It’s not the best situation for students, especially with the semester just getting started—everyone’s trying to get into the groove, and now there’s this disruption. Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, the power is back on and everything’s running smoothly.

Fingers crossed that students can return to class without any more interruptions, but at least they got an early break in the semester!

UWinnipeg Receives $750,000 in Funding

Source: Uwinnipeg News

It’s another school story, but this one’s a win for the whole community! Six UWinnipeg professors just got over $750,000 in research funding, and it’s going toward some seriously interesting projects. This kind of funding not only boosts research but also encourages more groundbreaking work right here in Winnipeg. Here’s what they’re working on:

  • Mary Jane McCallum: $334,884 for studying the history of the Munsee Delaware Nation and building an exhibit that sheds light on colonial violence. This could reshape how we understand Indigenous history in Canada.

  • Sharanpal Ruprai: $94,368 to explore how Queer Sikh artists use social media to express identity. A big step for cultural and social change!

  • Celiese Lypka: $74,138 to examine Métis family stories and the impact of dislocation. This research could bring healing to many.

  • Amy Desroches: $94,999 to improve how we identify kids struggling with reading and math. A win for early education!

  • Peter Miller: $69,337 to trace the roots of modern fitness back to ancient Greece and Rome. Your next workout has some deep history!

  • Lam An: $89,382 to study how facial expressions in fake news can impact its persuasiveness. Fighting disinformation one face at a time!

This funding supports long-term research that could have lasting impacts on both local and national levels. Exciting times ahead for UWinnipeg!

Winnipeggers Win $4M in Lotteries

As reported by CTV News, newlyweds Hannah Matthews and Ben Gaboury just won $3 million on a Scratch & Win ticket. They picked it up at a gas station and had to check it multiple times before it sank in—they were multi-millionaires! With plans to take a belated honeymoon to Greece and buy a new house. Talk about starting married life off with a bang!

But wait, there’s more! Again as reported by CTV News, another Winnipegger Thinh Hoang won $1 million on a Lotto 6/49 ticket. He thought he had won $1,000 at first, but after double-checking, it turned out to be much bigger! With so much luck in the air, it’s fun to think about what you'd do with a win like that.

What would you do if you won one of these lotteries? Reply to this email and let us know!

Winnipeg’s Own on Survivor

As reported by the Winnipeg Free Press, Winnipeg’s Genevieve Mushaluk is living out her childhood dream as one of the 18 contestants on the new season of Survivor! Genevieve, a corporate lawyer, used to skip school dances just to watch the show with her family, and now she’s actually in Fiji competing for the US$1-million prize.

She’s the first Manitoban to make it on the show, which is pretty awesome for all the local Survivor fans out there. Let’s cheer her on as she takes on this wild adventure—don’t miss the premiere today!

City Development:

Desautels Concert Hall is Open for Business

Source: U of M News

Winnipeg’s newest gem, the Desautels Concert Hall at the University of Manitoba, is now officially open! It’s a fresh new venue for all things music, and the grand opening concerts have already been a hit. While the first two shows sold out, you can still catch the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra on Sept. 25. It’s the perfect opportunity to support local arts and enjoy live performances in this stunning space.

St. Mary’s Road Overpass Now Open

Source: MySteinbach.ca

Good news for anyone driving along St. Mary’s Road! The new overpass is officially open to traffic, which should help ease congestion around the area. It’s a big part of Manitoba’s efforts to improve the Perimeter Highway and make the commute easier for everyone. For now, vehicles can use the bridge, and pedestrians and cyclists should be able to cross by the end of the month.

This is a huge win for the city, making travel safer and quicker. Plus, it’s all part of a larger plan to keep Winnipeg ready for future growth. Drive safe, and keep an eye out for construction workers as they finish up!

Canada’s Largest Arctic Char Facility Coming to Manitoba

Manitoba is about to be home to the largest Arctic char facility in Canada, as reported by the government. Sapphire Springs Inc. is building a $145-million facility just north of Winnipeg that’ll bring over 100 full-time jobs and boost our local economy.

This project is huge—not only does it create jobs, but it also positions Manitoba as a leader in sustainable seafood production. The facility is expected to be up and running by 2026, and once fully operational, it’ll supply 5,000 metric tonnes of Arctic char per year.

Keep an eye out for updates as this project grows!
