New Life Advice Hotline from Local Seniors Opens in Winnipeg
The best lessons don’t always come from books or podcasts. Sometimes they come from sitting across the table from someone who’s lived through it all: raising kids, working tough jobs, and braving Winnipeg winters long before us. Now, thanks to a new project at Misericordia Place, that kind of wisdom is just a phone call away.
The care home has launched a life advice hotline, giving residents the chance to share their stories and insights with anyone who calls in. It’s heartfelt, unpolished, and rooted in real experience.
Here’s what makes it special:
The hotline lets you choose topics like love, work, or even how to handle a Winnipeg winter
The idea started in art sessions, where residents often shared stories alongside their drawings
Artist-in-residence Natalie Baird helped shape the hotline after years of recording and collecting residents’ reflections
Call 204-788-8060 to hear the advice directly from the residents themselves
This project is more than just a phone number; it’s a way to connect generations.
Whether you’re stepping into a new chapter of life, looking for perspective, or just wanting to hear a familiar kind of wisdom, the hotline is a reminder that the simplest words from someone who’s lived it can stay with you the longest.

Winnipeg Police Warn About Phone Scam Calls
We’ve all had those moments where the phone rings and something feels a little off. Lately, folks across the city have been getting calls that look like they’re from Winnipeg Police, but they’re not.
It’s a good reminder to stay alert and help one another out.
Scammers are faking the Winnipeg police non-emergency number (204-986-6222)
They pretend to be officers and have asked for personal information
So far no money requests, but police say that could happen
Police will never call to ask for bank info, ID numbers, or credit cards
It’s easy to understand how someone might believe the call when a trusted number shows up on the screen. If you get a call like this, hang up right away and dial the real non-emergency line yourself.
And most importantly: pass this along. A quick conversation with a parent, a neighbour, or a friend could save them from being caught off guard.
Winnipeg Names New North Kildonan Court to Honour Chad Posthumus

Source: Winnipeg Sea Bears
Some people leave a mark that goes beyond the scoreboard. For many in Winnipeg, Chad Posthumus was one of those people. A teammate, a leader, and a friend who poured his heart into the game and into the people around him. Now, his name will live on in a place where future generations will play.
Here’s what to know:
The new basketball courts at Gateway Recreation Centre will be named Chad Posthumus Memorial Court
City councillors voted in support of the naming, with full approval expected soon
Chad was the Sea Bears’ first-ever signing and captain
He passed away in November 2024 at just 33, after a brain aneurysm
For the kids who will grow up shooting hoops there, the name on that court will be a reminder that basketball isn’t just about talent. It’s about resilience, leadership, and heart.
And for those who knew Chad, it’s a way of keeping his spirit woven into the community he loved.
HSC Millionaire Lottery Returns with $1.5M in Grand Prizes
Supporting health care in Manitoba has always been a community effort, and one of the most exciting ways people show up each year is through the HSC Millionaire Lottery. It’s not just about the prizes (though they’re impressive), but about helping build a stronger health system for everyone.
The 2025 edition has officially launched, offering more than 2,000 prizes and over $2 million in value, including six grand prize options worth up to $1.5 million each.
Grand prizes include luxury homes in West St. Paul, Sage Creek, Oak Bluff, and Vancouver Island
Each prize bundle comes with a BMW iX, travel vouchers, Co-op groceries and gas, and cash
Winners can also choose $1.25 million in tax-free cash
New this year: a Grey Cup bonus draw for tickets purchased by October 23
Funds raised will directly support patient care at HSC Winnipeg through new clinical spaces, state-of-the-art equipment, and research efforts that benefit people across the province.
City Updates
Winnipeg Moves Ahead with Supportive Housing on 5 City Sites
Every person deserves a safe place to call home, and for many in our city, that’s still out of reach. But this fall, Winnipeg is taking a meaningful step toward changing that.
The City just selected five city-owned sites to build supportive housing, which means affordable homes with on-site help for folks facing things like health challenges, homelessness, or leaving unsafe situations. The goal is to offer not just housing, but stability and care.
Sites include areas like Sherburn St, Plessis Rd, Stella Ave, Poseidon Bay, and McPhillips St
Each location will have private suites, shared kitchens, and on-site support workers
It’s built for people at real risk: youth aging out of care, people leaving hospitals or encampments, refugees, and women facing violence
The City will rezone and transfer land, while non-profits build and run the homes
A public rezoning hearing is set for September 12, where anyone can attend or send written feedback
A project like this goes beyond bricks and mortar, it creates peace of mind. For the people moving in, it’s the comfort of knowing there’s help nearby, a kitchen to cook in, and a door they can call their own.
And for our city, it’s a reminder of what really matters: making sure no one is left without a safe place to belong.
