Manitoba Hydro New Scam Alert
Winnipeggers, look out! A scam is going around, and it’s pretty convincing. As reported by CBC News, Destiny Funk, a fellow local, shared her story about almost falling for it. These scammers posed as Manitoba Hydro and even had her name, address, and account info. Scary, right?
Here’s how it went down:
The setup: She got a call saying her power would be cut in an hour because of missed payments.
The hook: The scammers had a fake Hydro phone menu, hold music, and even a “work order” number. Talk about elaborate.
The ask: They didn’t ask for her credit card (a red flag we all know to watch for). Instead, they told her to pay cash at a bitcoin kiosk in a convenience store.
Thankfully, Destiny trusted her instincts and went straight to Hydro’s office, where they confirmed it was a scam.
Let this be a reminder for all of us: Hydro doesn’t make last-minute threats or take payments through bitcoin kiosks. If you get a sketchy call, hang up and call Hydro directly. Please be sure to spread the word, especially to seniors and anyone who might not spot the warning signs. Let’s look out for each other, Winnipeg.
Manitoba Listens to Health-Care Workers
Healthcare in Manitoba has had its share of criticism—long waits, staff shortages, and burnout. But there’s good news: things are starting to change. The government’s health-care listening tour has been all about hearing directly from frontline workers and making meaningful improvements.
Here’s what they heard, what they’ve done, and what’s next:
What they heard:
Staffing shortages and burnout are major issues.
Safety concerns, like outdated security measures, make some workplaces feel unsafe.
Not enough hospital beds, leading to long ER waits and delays.
Frontline workers feel unheard and want a culture shift to prioritize their voices.
What they’ve done:
Hired 873 new healthcare workers and offered every graduate a job in Manitoba.
Added 201 new hospital beds and reopened 78 personal care home beds.
Improved safety with new security measures like cameras and Safe Walk services.
Signed fair contracts with nurses and health-care support staff.
What they’re doing next:
Adding 102 more staffed beds across the province.
Expanding access to mobile MRI services in the north.
Building a new emergency room at Victoria General Hospital.
Introducing child-care resources to help with work-life balance and more!
It’s not perfect yet, but progress is happening. These changes show that when frontline workers speak up, good things can happen.

Manitoba’s $20M Strategy to Empower Indigenous Women
The provincial government just launched a $20 million strategy to support Indigenous women, girls, two-spirit, and gender-diverse people. It’s called Mino’Ayaawag Ikwewag, which means "all women doing well" in Anishinaabemowin.
Why does this matter? Manitoba has some of the highest rates of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit relatives in Canada. This strategy isn’t just another announcement, it’s about action, healing, and creating real change.
Here’s what it includes:
$15 million endowment fund for families impacted by MMIWG2S+.
$2.2 million in prevention and empowerment grants for programs and services.
And lastly funding for initiatives like Safe Ride programs, healing spaces, and annual family gatherings.
The plan tackles issues like housing, health, justice, and education, with a focus on long-term solutions! This funding lays the groundwork for real change, bringing hope and opportunity to those who need it most.
Honoring Lives Lost During Holodomor
As reported by CTV News, this weekend, Winnipeg’s Ukrainian community came together at City Hall to honor the millions of lives lost during the Holodomor, a man-made famine in 1932-33. It was a powerful moment of reflection, especially with the ongoing war in Ukraine reminding us how important it is to remember and support those affected by injustice.
The ceremony included a traditional Ukrainian memorial service and songs like Vichnaya Pam’yat (“Eternal Memory”). Even amidst other events at City Hall that day, there was a shared moment of respect as people stood in solidarity with the Ukrainian community.
This was more than just a tribute—it was a reminder of the resilience of those who came before us and the strength of those still fighting today. Winnipeg has always been a city that shows up for its neighbors, and this gathering proved just that.

Manitoba’s First Mpox Case
Manitoba has reported its first case of clade Ib mpox, marking Canada’s first confirmed case of this specific strain. The individual, who recently returned from a trip to Africa, is isolating, and contact tracing is underway.
While the overall risk to the public is low, it’s important to stay informed—especially if you or someone you know is a senior or has a weaker immune system. Mpox spreads through close contact with someone showing symptoms or contaminated materials like bedding.
The good news? Public health officials are on top of it, and there’s no need for widespread concern. But it’s a reminder to keep an eye out for updates and take precautions if needed. Staying informed and looking out for each other is how we keep our community safe.
Slippery Roads and a Scary Reminder
Winnipeg drivers, please slow down. As reported by CBC news, last Friday afternoon, a semi-trailer slid off the overpass near the Perimeter Highway and Trans-Canada intersection, crashing into a train below. The impact caused a derailment, road closures, and sent one person to the hospital in stable condition.
Thankfully, no hazardous materials spilled, and emergency crews quickly cleared the scene. But this incident is a sobering reminder of how icy roads can turn dangerous in seconds, especially as temperatures dip.
With the holidays around the corner, let’s take extra care on the roads. Slow down, give yourself plenty of room to stop, and stay alert for slick spots, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Safe driving means everyone gets home to their loved ones—and that’s what matters most.
