Happy Friday, Winnipeg!
The first official week of the new year is already coming to an end, and somehow January decided to be a little kinder than usual. A bit more sun, slightly warmer days, and weather that actually makes stepping outside feel doable.
We hope you found a small moment this week to get some fresh air, even if it was just a short walk or a quick stop outside before heading back in.
Now, in today’s edition:

A Look Back at Winnipeg Transit Through the Years

Winnipeg has been moving people around for nearly 150 years, and a big part of that story has quietly been sitting in binders and boxes. Until now.
Thousands of historic transit photos have been digitized and shared, giving Winnipeggers a chance to see how the city looked and moved in earlier generations.
It’s the kind of history that feels personal, especially if you’ve spent years riding the bus or walking these same streets.
Here’s what you’ll find:
Over 6,000 photos showing transit in Winnipeg, dating back to the 1880s
Images of horse-drawn streetcars / early streetcars, and buses through the decades
Many photos taken by well-known Winnipeg photographers
And nearly 600 images now available online through Winnipeg in Focus, with more being added over time
If you enjoy Winnipeg history or just like seeing familiar streets and places from a different time, this collection is worth a few minutes. It’s easy to scroll through and hard not to smile at how much the city has grown.
PS: A selection of these photos is also on display at City Hall at the Susan A. Thompson Building, 510 Main Street. You can visit the exhibit on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

City Updates
CAUTION: New Street Drug Stronger Than Fentanyl Found in Winnipeg

Source: Street Connections
A new street drug has been found in Winnipeg, and it’s raising serious safety concerns for families and communities.
Local testing has confirmed that a white pill being sold as Percocet is actually something much more dangerous. The pill contains metonitazene, a synthetic opioid that is stronger than fentanyl, which means the risk of overdose is extremely high even in small amounts.
Here’s what to know:
The pill is white and round, marked “TEC” on one side with a scored line on the other
It was first tested locally by Street Connections and later confirmed through Health Canada
Metonitazene is more potent than fentanyl, greatly increasing overdose risk
Naloxone can reverse overdoses, but because of the strength, more than one dose may be needed
For parents and caregivers, this is an important reminder to stay alert and keep open conversations going with teens and young adults.
If you ever come across pills like this in your neighbourhood, do not touch them and take them seriously. Sharing this information helps keep people safe.

Community Digest
What’s Next for the University of Manitoba Campus

Source: UM News
The University of Manitoba is opening the door for the community to take part in a big moment that will shape its campus for decades to come. It’s one of those events that’s easy to miss, but meaningful if you’re interested in where higher education in Winnipeg is headed.
On January 20, UM is launching Building Bold, a new 30-year capital plan focused on how the campus will grow, renew key spaces, and plan for future students.
This is especially relevant for current students, parents with kids thinking about university, and anyone curious about long-term changes at UM.
Here’s what the launch will cover:
An overview of UM’s long-term vision for people, place, and possibility
How future projects will reflect sustainability, reconciliation, and academic excellence
Digital renderings showing what upcoming campus spaces could look like
A chance to ask questions, either in person or online
The event runs from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. at the UMSU University Centre, with a virtual option available as well.
If this is something you’ve been meaning to follow, it’s worth signing up now and adding it to your calendar before it gets busy.
