News
Portage and Main Project Jumps by $8M
A report from Winnipeg City Hall shows the cost to reopen Portage and Main to pedestrians just jumped by $8 million, bringing the total to $21.3 million. Back in March, the project got the go-ahead with a $13 million budget, but with tight deadlines, winter construction, and high labor demands, that budget didn’t hold up.
To keep the project on track, the city is moving money from other areas, including road renewal and downtown streets. While opinions are still split on whether Portage and Main should be open to foot traffic, this project is a big step for making downtown more accessible and walkable.
It doesn’t look the best to have to pull budget from other parts of city services, so let’s just hope this cost doesn’t increase anymore.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week (November 1-7) is here, and it's a good reminder to check your home safety basics. Carbon monoxide is a silent, invisible threat that can build up without any warning signs. Here’s how to keep your family safe:
Know the symptoms: Carbon monoxide poisoning can feel like the flu—nausea, dizziness, confusion, vision and hearing loss. If you suspect it, get outside and call 9-1-1.
Install alarms: Make sure to have a carbon monoxide alarm on every level, outside sleeping areas, and in the basement.
Service fuel-burning appliances: Get a qualified technician to clean and service your furnace, fireplace, and gas dryer each year.
Clear vents and chimneys: Keep fresh air intakes, exhaust vents, and chimneys clear of snow, leaves, and debris.
Be cautious with garages: Never idle a car in an attached garage, even if the door is open.
With daylight savings ending yesterday, it’s a great time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace batteries, test alarms, and if they’re over 10 years old, swap them out. Let’s keep our homes safe and sound this winter!

City Updates
$13.7M for Arts and Culture in Winnipeg
The Manitoba government is putting its money where its heart is this year, pledging $13.7 million to the Manitoba Arts Council. The funding is up 8% from last year, meaning more support for artists, musicians, Indigenous knowledge keepers, and arts organizations all across the province. From the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to emerging artists creating new work, this investment is all about keeping Manitoba’s arts scene thriving.
The arts aren’t just performances and exhibits, they’re a way for us to connect, share our stories, and celebrate our communities. With over 25 new organizations and 40 new projects receiving grants, it’s clear Manitoba’s creative energy is growing. So, next time you head out to a show or visit a gallery, remember this investment is making it all possible, right here in our own city.
Green Infrastructure for Sewer Overflows
Did you know Winnipeg’s sewer system sends stormwater and waste into our rivers during heavy rain? Well to help prevent this, the city’s rolling out green infrastructure like rain gardens to naturally filter water before it hits the sewers.
This isn’t just about pipes. It’s a move toward a cleaner, greener Winnipeg. Think of it as adding more green spots around town that do double-duty—beautifying our city and protecting our waterways. As reported by CBC News, over the next few years, this eco-friendly shift means cleaner rivers and fewer overflows. With 10% of sewer funds now going towards these kinds of projects, the city is aiming for solutions that look good and make a real impact. Here’s to a cleaner, greener Winnipeg!
New Mural as Part of Indigenous Women’s Strategy

Source: North End Womens Centre
Winnipeg just got a breathtaking new mural, and it’s so much more than art. As reported by APTN News, created by Jeannie White Bird from Rolling River First Nation, this 15-story piece downtown at 444 Kennedy shines a light on Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirited people. Named Giizaagiigo (meaning “you are loved” in Anishinaabemowin), the mural is part of Manitoba’s Indigenous Women’s Strategy and is packed with powerful symbolism—a full moon, a feather for truth, and vibrant colors that speak to unity and resilience.
The mural is a visual tribute to heritage, strength, and pride for Indigenous communities. It’s a reminder of stories often untold and an invitation to celebrate them. Swing by downtown and see it for yourself—it’s a bold statement of empowerment and a beautiful addition to the city.
Winnipeg Sports
High School Football Record and Finals
The single-season passing touchdown record in Winnipeg high school football was finally broken—and not by just one, but two players! As reported by CTV News, Oak Park’s Kevan Savage threw 26 touchdowns, with Dakota’s Rogan Vergata right behind with 25. Both quarterbacks have led their teams to undefeated seasons, setting the stage for a highly anticipated AAAA final.
Here’s what’s making this game one to watch:
Defensive strength: Oak Park didn’t allow a single point in the regular season, while Dakota only gave up eight.
Offensive power: Oak Park racked up 346 points this season, and Dakota wasn’t far behind with 332.
So be sure to catch the showdown on November 7 at Princess Auto Stadium!
Winnipeg Jets With Another Win
The Jets just keep rolling! Winnipeg kicked off November with a solid 6-2 win over the Blue Jackets in Columbus, thanks to a hat trick by Nikolaj Ehlers and a season-high 11-game point streak for Kyle Connor. That makes it 10-1 for the season so far, with an undefeated road record still intact.
And as I’m writing this, they’re gearing up for a home game tonight against Tampa Bay, so here’s hoping the streak keeps going strong. Go Jets go!
