South Winnipeg Gets New Emergency Room
Happy Monday, Winnipeg!
Before we jump into the week’s edition, we just wanted to share a quick note about the poll we ran on Friday.
Nothing’s changing with our three weekly newsletters. They’ll keep coming your way every week, packed with the same local stories, events, and updates you love. Our goal has always been to make life in Winnipeg a little easier (and a lot more fun), and that’s not going anywhere.
We’re simply exploring a few new ideas that might add even more value for you, our community, and our city. We’re not set on anything yet, but we’ll keep exploring these ideas with you, and your feedback will guide what we build next.
So thank you for sticking with us, for sharing your thoughts, and for helping shape what Winnipeg Digest becomes next.
Now, in today’s edition:

Jets Season Kicks Off at Home This Week

Source: Winnipeg Jets
Preseason’s wrapped, the lines are settling in, and the boys are back on home ice this week to open the 2025–26 season. It’s been a long wait since that playoff run, and the excitement around this year's roster feels real.
Before the puck drops, here’s how the preseason ended:
Jets came back from a 4–1 deficit to beat the Flames 5–4 in the last game
Goals from Nyquist, Iafallo, Fleury, and Ford helped fuel the rally
Tanner Pearson scored the shootout winner in round seven
With Perfetti and DeMelo leaving with injuries
Now it’s time for the games that count:
Home Opener vs. Dallas Stars — Thursday, Oct 9 at 7 PM
Opening Weekend vs. LA Kings — Saturday, Oct 11 at 12:30 PM
If you’ve been waiting for a reason to head back to Canada Life Centre, this is it. The energy’s building, the jerseys are coming out, and the season starts now.
Let’s start strong, stay loud, and see if this is the year we bring the Cup home.

Restaurant of the Week: Maxime’s Restaurant and Lounge

Source: Maxime’s
After 41 years, Maxime’s Restaurant and Lounge is closing its doors, and there’s still time to stop by before the final plate is served.
Opened by the Bekios family back in 1984, Maxime’s has long been a south Winnipeg staple for classic dishes, warm hospitality, and that timeless old-school charm. The building has been sold, and the family has announced they’ll be retiring in mid-November.
Here’s why it’s worth visiting before they close:
Comfort classics like prime rib, pickerel, veal, and cherry pie
Friendly, old-school service with a personal touch, just like you remember
Spacious dining room with cozy booths, elegant decor, and free parking
Known for celebrations, a go-to for milestones, family dinners, and Sunday lunch
Whether it’s been 5 years or 35 since your last visit, it’s a good time to drop in, enjoy a favourite dish, and give a quiet nod to a place that’s been part of the neighbourhood for decades.
Maxime’s has been steady, familiar, and well-loved. And as it gets ready to close, a final visit feels like the right kind of send-off. If you’ve ever been, or always meant to go, now’s the time.

Everyone’s got that one teacher they’ll never forget: the one who believed in you, stayed after class to help, or made you feel seen. This fall, you can say thank you in a big way.
The Manitoba government is now accepting nominations for the 2025–2026 Excellence in Education Awards, a chance to shine a light on educators who go above and beyond.

Property Tax Assessment Notices May Be Delayed Outside Winnipeg
If you’re waiting on your 2026 property assessment notice and live outside the city, it might take a little longer to arrive. As you know, a nationwide postal disruption is causing delays, but there are still ways to access what you need online.
Here’s how to stay on top of it:
Check your 2026 assessment online using Manitoba Assessment Online
Appeal deadlines and municipal notice dates are also posted online
Set up a MyPropertyMB account to view full property details
Call your district office if you need help, contact info is listed online
While paper mail might be slow for now, everything is still accessible if you know where to look. If you’ve got a deadline coming up, it’s worth checking online early just to be safe.
New Emergency Room Coming to Victoria Hospital in 2026

Source: Victoria General Hospital
For families in South Winnipeg, this is the kind of news that hits close to home. After the emergency room at Victoria Hospital was closed back in 2017, many have been waiting and hoping for care to return to their part of the city. Now, that wait is nearly over.
The province is officially moving forward with plans for a brand new emergency department at Victoria Hospital, with construction set to begin in January 2026. This next step follows two years of staffing up, listening to frontline workers, and gathering input from the community to shape a space that meets the real needs of the neighbourhood.
Here’s what’s planned:
A full-service ER will replace the current urgent care centre
Construction kicks off this January, with the tender awarded this fall
More staff are already in place, with 57 new health-care workers added at Victoria over the past two years
New services are being added, including the return of the Mature Women’s Centre
The Anne Oake Family Recovery Centre will also open alongside the emergency department, supported by $5 million in funding
It’s a long-awaited return of essential care to a growing part of the city that’s felt its absence for years. For many families, it means less driving, less waiting, and more peace of mind knowing help is nearby again.
