Food Waste Drop-Off Stations Are Here!

Starting October 15, Winnipeg is getting 15 food waste drop-off stations, making it easier for us to do our part for the planet. While we wait for the full green cart program to roll out, these stations offer a simple way for us to keep food scraps out of the landfill—and help tackle climate change.

For every tonne of food waste diverted, we remove two tonnes of CO2 emissions—so this really adds up! Thanks to a partnership with Compost Winnipeg, it’s super convenient. Just collect your food scraps, take them to a drop-off station, and you’ve made a difference. It’s an easy win for the environment and our community. So, before tossing those leftovers—think again!

Accessible Vehicle Program Set to Stay

As reported by CBC News, Winnipeg’s accessible vehicle program is on track to become permanent! Originally set to end on December 31, 2024, this pilot has been a game-changer for residents with disabilities. Before, some waited up to two hours for a ride, but now over 90% of trips are picked up within 20 minutes.

This program has provided reliable transportation options, giving people more freedom and independence. While there’s debate over changes to driver incentives that could impact the number of accessible taxis, making the program permanent is a huge win for the community. The final decision now rests with city council!

Community Updates

Jets Celebrate Winnipeg’s Ukrainian Culture

Source: The Winnipeg Jets

The Winnipeg Jets are scoring big on and off the ice! They just beat the Calgary Flames 5-2 in Tuesday’s pre-season game, but the real highlight was unveiling their new Ukrainian Heritage logo. Local artist Andrii Sobchuk designed it, and it’s such a cool way to celebrate one of Winnipeg’s biggest cultural communities. It really shows how the Jets are all about bringing people together through sports.

Oh, and don’t forget—Ukrainian Heritage Night is set for January 2, 2025. But first, the Jets’ home opener is right around the corner on October 11! It’s the perfect chance to catch the team in action and feel the energy in the arena. If you haven’t snagged your tickets yet, now’s the time. Let’s get out there and cheer them on—Go Jets Go!

Kinew Marks One Year of Progress

It’s been a year since Premier Wab Kinew’s government came into office, and while we usually stay away from politics, some of the progress made is worth mentioning:

  • 873 new healthcare workers have been hired, with plans for more.

  • A universal school nutrition program was rolled out to help kids focus in class.

  • 1,100 people have been housed, tackling chronic homelessness.

Kinew’s government has made strides on key issues, and while there’s always more to be done, it’s good to see progress on things that matter to Manitobans.

Healthcare Strike Looming in Manitoba

Manitoba’s healthcare system might face some serious disruptions as 25,000 healthcare support workers could go on strike on October 8.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • If no deal is reached, services like hospitals and home care could be reduced by 30%, with essential workers like aides and clerks walking off the job.

  • Both the union and the government are still trying to reach a resolution, but tensions are high.

A lot of Winnipeggers are keeping a close eye on this, as it could affect the healthcare we all rely on. Hopefully, they find a solution soon!

School Programs

UWinnipeg Launches First PhD Program

Source: UWinnipeg

UWinnipeg is rolling out its first-ever PhD program in Bioscience and Policy, and it’s a pretty big deal for the university and the city. Now, students have another option for this level of education other than just the U of M.

This program is ideal for anyone who wants to mix science with real-world problem-solving, tackling big issues like climate change and healthcare. Whether you're aiming to make waves in biotech, government, or even start something of your own, this PhD is a huge step forward for UWinnipeg and for Winnipeg as a whole!

New Innovation Hub for Manitoba Manufacturing

RRC Polytech is really shaking things up with their new Centre for Automation and Manufacturing Technology Transfer (CAMTT). It’s a space where local businesses can get into automation, robotics, AI, and all that exciting stuff.

What’s cool is that it’s not just for the big guys—small and medium businesses can work with experts and students to bring fresh ideas to life. It’s going to create jobs, boost the economy, and make sure everyone has a shot at these opportunities.
