What Canada Post Strike Means for Winnipeg

Hey Winnipeggers!

Firstly, a quick correction from our last edition—we mentioned the Grey Cup would be in Hamilton, but it’s actually happening in Vancouver. Hope we didn’t cause any inconvenience to anyone! Thank you to everyone who reached out to correct us, we appreciate your sharp eyes and support. We’ll be more careful moving forward.

Also, I saw a bunch of replies in the last newsletter saying how many of you were referred here by family and friends. That’s so awesome to hear! It shows we’re doing something right, and honestly, it’s things like that that keep us going. So, thank you for spreading the word and being part of this growing community!

What Canada Post Strike Means for Winnipeg

A Canada Post strike could throw a wrench in how many of us handle essential services. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has issued a 72-hour strike notice, meaning we could see a work stoppage as early as Friday. Hopefully, both sides can reach an agreement before then.

But, If you rely on Canada Post for any of the following services, here’s how you can navigate the changes.

City Departments and Services Affected

  • Animal Services: Renew pet licences online or visit Animal Services at 1057 Logan Ave. If you mailed a cheque, call 311 to avoid penalties.

  • Property & Business Taxes: Pay via online banking, at your bank, or in person at 510 Main St. or 170 Goulet St.

  • Winnipeg Public Library: Switch to email or phone notifications. Use the My Account service or the library app for renewals and holds.

  • Business Licences: Renew online or in person at 395 Main St.

  • Utility Bills: Pay online, by phone, or in person at 311 counters.

  • Parking Tickets: Pay fines online, by calling 311, or in person at 495 Portage Ave.

For other services or questions, the city’s 311 line is your go-to for making alternative arrangements. Let’s hope for a resolution before Friday.

$25M for HSC Children’s Hospital

Big news for Winnipeg families: the Manitoba government is putting $25 million toward upgrading the HSC Children’s Hospital. This cash will help modernize the emergency department, add more pediatric beds, and create new operating rooms.

Why does this matter? Because no parent wants to spend extra time waiting in a crowded ER when their child needs care. These upgrades mean shorter wait times, more space, and better facilities for kids facing serious health challenges.

The Children’s Hospital Foundation has already smashed its $75M fundraising goal, thanks to the generosity of Manitobans. Now, with the province’s help, HSC Children’s will be able to deliver even better care in a safe, updated environment.

This is about making sure every child gets the support they need when it matters most. Fingers crossed these changes bring some much-needed relief for families across our city.

Charity of the Week:

Operation Red Nose Winnipeg

The holidays are full of good times, but they can also come with some risky late-night drives. That’s where Operation Red Nose Winnipeg steps in, offering free rides to make sure everyone gets home safely.

As reported by CTV News, this year’s launch almost didn’t happen due to a funding gap after their host charity stepped away. Thankfully, Winnipeggers and local businesses came through, and now they’re gearing up to hit the road. But they still need a little help to get there.

Here’s how you can support:

  • Volunteer: They need 300 volunteers, including drivers, office workers, and committee members.

  • Buy a Supporter Pack: Perfect for local businesses, these packs promote safe driving and help fund the service.

Operation Red Nose is a holiday essential, helping to keep our roads safe and spirits high. Let’s rally together to make this season safe for everyone.

Keeping Winnipeg Safer: $647K for Police Initiatives

With the current police shortage, it’s good to see the government stepping up. Manitoba is putting $647,000 into the Winnipeg Police Service to help fight crime and support the people working hard to keep us safe.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • $415K for a rescue van to protect officers, victims, and bystanders during high-risk situations.

  • $100K for mental health and trauma-informed training to better equip officers.

  • $30K to form an Indigenous advisory council, ensuring culturally appropriate and trauma-informed practices.

The rest will go toward other key equipment and programs. It’s all funded by the Criminal Property Forfeiture Fund, which uses money from seized criminal assets to enhance public safety.

This investment is about more than just crime prevention—it’s about supporting officers, improving community trust, and making Winnipeg a safer place for everyone.

Calling All Artists: Odeon Park Needs You

Source: Scatliff + Miller + Murray

A new park in downtown Winnipeg is calling for creative minds. Odeon Park, set to open at Smith Street and Notre Dame Avenue, is looking for an artist to design a playful public artwork.

The park will be a vibrant mix of green and event spaces, with a stage and plenty of seating. Whether it’s a quiet afternoon or a lively festival night, this space is meant to bring people together—and your art could be a part of it.

With the project budget being $100,000. And the deadline to apply December 3rd, be sure to share this with any artist who might be interested! Let’s help make downtown more colorful together.

100 New Jobs in the Aerospace Industry

Winnipeg’s aerospace industry is flying high. StandardAero is getting over $500K in joint funding from the province and federal government to train workers and create 100 new jobs.

This is great news for Winnipeggers looking to break into skilled trades or level up in their careers. StandardAero has been a local staple since 1911, and this funding ensures they’ll keep growing and innovating right here in Manitoba.

With over 1,300 employees already on board, this investment strengthens our local economy and solidifies Winnipeg as a hub for the aerospace industry.
