What’s Open/Closed In Winnipeg Over Easter Weekend

Source: Square Yards Canada

The Easter long weekend tends to slow things down a bit around the city. Fewer errands, quieter streets, and a good chance to spend some time at home or with family.

With that comes a handful of schedule changes across Winnipeg for Good Friday (April 3) and Easter Monday (April 6).

Here’s a quick rundown so you’re not caught off guard:

  • Shopping centres

    • Most malls are open with reduced hours on Good Friday (11 AM to 6 PM) and closed Easter Sunday

    • Many return to regular hours on Easter Monday

  • Liquor Marts

    • Open reduced hours on Good Friday (around 11 AM to 6 PM)

    • Regular hours on Easter Monday

  • Museums and attractions

    • Canadian Museum for Human Rights: Open Friday and Sunday, closed Monday

    • Manitoba Museum: Open Friday (10 AM to 9 PM), closed Monday

    • WAG-Qaumajuq: Closed Friday and Monday, open Sunday

  • Transit and city services

    • Winnipeg Transit runs on a Sunday schedule on Good Friday

    • Garbage and recycling stay on regular schedule

    • Civic offices, libraries, and most facilities are closed Friday and Monday

It’s one of those slower weekends across the city, and a good reminder to take it easy and enjoy a bit of time with the people around you.

So whether you’re heading out for a quick stop or keeping things simple at home, we hope this helps make planning a little easier.

Winnipeg Goldeyes Turn Into Manitoba Mosquitoes

Source: Winnipeg Goldeyes

If you live in Winnipeg, you already know… mosquitoes are just part of summer here.

And the Winnipeg Goldeyes leaned into that this week with a fun reveal, announcing a rebrand as the Manitoba Mosquitoes.

While it started as an April Fool’s joke, part of it is actually happening.

For one night only, the team will take the field as the Mosquitoes on July 31, complete with special jerseys, themed merch, and a full game experience built around Manitoba’s most familiar summer guest.

The idea plays off something every local knows. Mosquitoes are basically part of summer here. They show up everywhere, stick around, and somehow always find you.

And honestly, it fits the team. Fast, relentless, and impossible to ignore.

It’s a lighthearted way to celebrate a very real part of life in Manitoba, and it’s shaping up to be a fun, slightly chaotic night at the ballpark.

City Updates

City Crews Cut Down Trees Infected By Emerald Ash Borer

Source: Love Your Landscape

If you’ve noticed trees being cut down in parts of the city, here’s why.

The city is once again dealing with emerald ash borer, an invasive beetle that kills ash trees and has been a concern in Winnipeg since 2017.

When it was first found, there were real fears it could wipe out most of the city’s ash trees within 10 to 15 years, as seen in other parts of North America.

But thanks to preventative treatments and careful management, the spread was slowed over time, with only 22 infected public trees removed between 2017 and 2025.

However, a new population has recently been found, and crews have now started removing affected and at-risk trees in the Glenwood area to help protect what’s left.

Here’s what to watch for on your own trees:

  • Small metallic green beetles (about 1 cm long)

  • D-shaped holes in the bark

  • More woodpecker activity than usual

  • Splitting bark or lighter patches on the tree

One simple way to help is to not move firewood. Burn it where you buy it to avoid spreading the pest.

It’s never easy to see trees come down in your neighbourhood, especially ones that have been there for years.

So if you spot signs, reporting early can make a difference in protecting Winnipeg’s tree canopy.

P.S. Share this with family or friends so they know what to look for and how to help protect the trees in their neighbourhood!

Manitoba Increases Minimum Wage To $16.40 This October

There’s a small pay increase coming later this year for workers across the province.

Manitoba’s minimum wage is set to rise to $16.40 per hour starting October 1, up from the current $16.00. The increase follows the province’s usual yearly update, which is tied to inflation, meaning it adjusts based on how the cost of living has changed.

This year’s 40 cent increase reflects Manitoba’s 2025 inflation rate, rounded to the nearest five cents under the Employment Standards rules.

For many workers, it means a bit more in each paycheque as everyday costs continue to shift.

It’s one of the ways the province adjusts wages each year, aiming to keep things in line as prices change over time.
