Happy Friday, Winnipeg!

First off, a big thank you to everyone who came out to Dinner Club on Wednesday. The turnout was unreal, and the kind messages after made us feel really proud of what we’re building.

We’re hoping to make these dinners a monthly thing, and we’d love to keep adding more tables as we go. If you’ve been meaning to meet new people in the city, this is a pretty easy, low-pressure way to do it, and we hope we see you at the next one.

MITT to Shut Down Operations After Enrolment Drop

This news landed quietly, but it carries a lot of weight for Winnipeg. The Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology has announced it will begin winding down over the next year, following a sharp drop in enrolment tied to recent federal changes to the international student program.

Over the past two years, limits on international students have had ripple effects across schools in Canada. At MITT, international enrolment fell by more than 55 percent, leaving the institute without a sustainable financial path moving forward.

Throughout the announcement, MITT has been clear about one thing: students come first. The focus now is on making sure no one is left without support or a way to finish what they started.

Here’s what students and families can expect during the transition:

  • MITT will wind down operations gradually over the next year

  • All current students will be supported to complete their programs

  • Classes and training will continue as they do now

  • Industry training already underway will run through to completion

Looking ahead, some programs will continue in a new home. MITT, the province, and Red River College Polytech will work together on a detailed review focused on student outcomes and workforce needs.

That process includes:

  • Selected programs will transfer to Red River College Polytech

  • Some students will finish and graduate through RRC Polytech

  • Direct communication with students as decisions are finalized

It’s not easy news, but the message moving forward is about support and continuity. Making sure students can finish strong and that training pathways remain open will be the priority as the year unfolds.

A message from Canlan Sports!

Keep Kids Moving This Spring and Summer

Once winter starts to wind down, many hockey families begin thinking about what comes next: staying on the ice, keeping skills sharp, and providing kids with something active and consistent as the seasons change.

Canlan Sports is getting ready for their Spring and Summer Hockey Camps, plus the return of their Youth Hockey League (YHL). The YHL is for all hockey skill levels, with the puck dropping for Spring League on April 6 to June 21 and the Summer League from July 20 to August 27.

These programs focus on learning by doing. Building comfort on the ice, developing basic skills, and letting kids explore hockey in a way that feels fun, approachable, and low pressure.

Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Spring and Summer camps that introduce skating and hockey fundamentals

  • Programs focused on skill-building, balance, and confidence on the ice

  • Programs available for different ages and experience levels

  • And a structured, well-run environment that keeps hockey fun and consistent

Spring and summer programming can be a great way for kids to try hockey. More time to learn, more room to grow, and plenty of encouragement along the way.

If hockey is part of your household, this is a good time to look ahead and see what fits for the spring and summer months.

8 Things to Do in Winnipeg Winters When It’s -50°C

We know, we know, the title is a bit exaggerated. But after last week, it honestly felt close enough. Even with the weather warming up a bit next week, we still wanted to give a little reminder to the “Winnipeg is boring” crowd.

Winter here can be brutal, but it also has this funny way of pulling people into the same cozy corners of the city. You bundle up, you commit to the plan, and the minute you step inside somewhere warm, it feels like you made the right choice.

Here are a few ideas from the list:

  • Attend a pottery class and make something small you’ll actually use

  • Head to Dave Barber Cinematheque for a unique indie film

  • Get lost at McNally Robinson Booksellers and let the right book find you

There are 5 more on the full list, all picked to make winter feel a little lighter.

Nearly 300 New Homes Planned for Downtown Winnipeg

Source: Manitoba Historical Society

Downtown Winnipeg is set to see a major shift. CentreVenture has launched a new plan aimed at doubling downtown Winnipeg’s population by 2050, starting with nearly 300 new homes inside buildings that have sat underused for years.

The idea is simple: more people living downtown means more steady foot traffic for local shops, safer-feeling streets, and a core that has life in it past office hours. The plan focuses on turning vacant commercial and heritage spaces into housing that supports long-term growth.

To get things moving, $4.65 million in funding has been committed, with 106 units set aside as affordable housing.

The four redevelopment projects include:

  • St. Charles Hotel, 235 Notre Dame Avenue with 140 units

  • Maw’s Garage, 291 Bannatyne Avenue with 114 units

  • 290 Garry Street with 29 units

  • Alloway Lofts, 179 McDermot Avenue with 14 units

The focus is on reusing existing buildings that have sat empty for years, keeping downtown’s character while adding much-needed housing. Construction timelines have not been announced yet, but the direction is clear.

It’s a practical step toward a downtown that feels busier, more lived in, and better supported day to day.

City Updates

City Launches New Program to Improve Everyday Services

The City of Winnipeg has launched a new internal initiative focused on making everyday services work better for residents.

The Continuous Improvement Program invites City employees to share practical ideas that save time, reduce costs, and improve how services are delivered.

Instead of top-down changes, this program invites ideas from staff who know the work best and see the small frustrations and opportunities every day.

Here’s what the City is looking for ideas on:

  • Save time or reduce manual steps

  • Lower costs or help generate revenue

  • Improve service quality for residents

  • Reduce risk or improve safety

Ideas will be reviewed by senior leadership and supported by a dedicated City team trained in process improvement. The City has also been clear that this is not about cutting jobs, but about using existing resources better.

It’s a thoughtful approach that could lead to smoother services and better value for Winnipeggers over time.
