A 90-Day Study Could Move Freight Trains Out Of Winnipeg

You leave the house with time to spare. Then the arm comes down at the crossing, and you're counting rail cars while the clock keeps going.

That wait is now part of a much bigger question.

The province has launched a 90-day study into moving freight rail out of Winnipeg's core, chaired by Lloyd Axworthy.

The route being tested runs east to west along the Perimeter, on a Manitoba Hydro corridor that's already Crown land, cleared and serviced.

Three questions have to be answered first:

  • Can trains share that corridor without putting Manitoba Hydro's infrastructure at risk

  • What relocation would actually cost, and who covers it

  • Whether it works commercially for CN, CPKC and BNSF, who are each assigning a senior technical liaison to the study

There's a greenbelt idea attached to it too…

It would be a protected strip of land running beside the rail and Hydro corridor, keeping farmland and green space from being built over, and leaving room for trails and recreation along the Perimeter.

Nothing changes at your crossing this year. But for the first time there's a real piece of land on the table, and 90 days to find out what it would actually take.

Free Admission. Free Parking. Every Saturday Until October 4.

Most Saturdays in Winnipeg cost money.

Sixty bucks at the waterpark. Forty at the movies. Twenty in parking before anyone's eaten anything. You add it up in your head and end up at the park again.

Here's one that costs nothing.

Live harness racing runs every Saturday until October 4 at The Loop, at Red River Exhibition Park. Free to get in, free to park and free to enjoy!

  • Racing all afternoon

  • Food and drinks available on site if you want to make a day of it

  • Betting, if you want to make it interesting

  • Outdoors, for as many Saturdays as we've got left

You don't need to know a single rule. The horses come around the final turn, the crowd stands up, and you're standing too before you've decided to.

Here's the whole pitch. It's outside, it runs every Saturday for the next seven weeks, and it costs you nothing but the drive.

Winnipeg's Giant Corn Maze Opens Tomorrow

Fall doesn't show up on the calendar for another month. But it's already showing up in a field outside Winnipeg.

A Maze In Corn opens for the season tomorrow, August 15, at 11 a.m. The maze is cut, the animals are ready, and the gates are open.

Here's what families can look forward to:

  • Finding their way through the giant corn maze

  • Meeting the animals at the petting zoo

  • A full fall day outside, with the season running until late October

It may still feel like summer out there, but wandering through rows of tall corn is a pretty clear sign that cooler days and Halloween fun aren't far off.

Hours shift with the weather, so check before you make the drive. Last entry is one hour before closing.

Team Manitoba Brought Jets Energy To The Special Olympics

Team Manitoba didn't quietly walk into the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. They made sure everybody heard them coming.

Waiting to enter the opening ceremony, the whole team broke into a "Go Jets Go" chant. Loud, proud, and a little piece of Winnipeg carried all the way to Alberta.

Here's what to know:

  • The Games are running in Medicine Hat until tomorrow, August 15

  • Athletes from across Canada are competing in swimming, soccer, basketball and track and field

  • Team Manitoba's chant would have fit right in at Canada Life Centre on a Saturday night

Years of early mornings and long practices got them there. They earned that moment, and they announced it the way any Manitoban would, at full volume.

City Updates

Manitoba's First Supervised Consumption Site Is Now Fully Open

We told you about this one before it opened. After a string of delays and weeks of staff training, the Indigenous-led site at 366 Henry Avenue is fully open as of August 11.

It's run by the Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre, and it's open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Here's what's available:

  • Trained staff on hand to respond to overdoses

  • Drug checking for dangerous substances

  • Help finding treatment and healthcare

  • Connections to housing and other supports

The site doesn't supply drugs. It gives people a supervised place to use them, with nurses and a crisis counsellor close by. No one under 18 has access.

The longer-term plan is a permanent setup with a rapid access addiction medicine clinic and primary healthcare on site.

The hope is that fewer people will use drugs on sidewalks and in bus shelters, while more get the care they need.

Free Movie Night on the Field at Princess Auto Stadium

You've been to that splash pad more times this summer than you can count.

The park, the pool, the same loop every week. Nobody's complaining about it, but you'd struggle to name one afternoon that stood out.

There are two weeks left until school, and this is an experience the kids will actually remember.

Access Credit Union is putting on a free Movie at the Stadium on Tuesday, August 18. Not a screen in a park. The actual field at Princess Auto Stadium, with the movie up on the big screen.

Gates open at 6:00 and there's plenty to get into before the movie:

  • Bouncy castles and face painting

  • Movie characters walking around for photos

  • A photo booth and live entertainment

  • Free popcorn while it lasts

  • Food and drinks available to buy

Beauty and the Beast starts at 7:30, under the lights, on the field.

You do have to register to guarantee a spot, but it's free, and it takes ten seconds.

📅 Tuesday, August 18, gates open at 6:00
📍 Princess Auto Stadium, 315 Chancellor Matheson Rd

P.S. Share this with any friends and family who have little ones, or anyone who'd just want to come. You don't need kids to enjoy a movie under the lights.
