Winnipeg Prepares RBC Convention Centre for Incoming Fire Evacuees

You don’t have to look far to see how much people care around here. When neighbours are in trouble, we show up, and this week, Winnipeg’s doing just that.
The RBC Convention Centre is being set up with 4,000 cots, ready to welcome evacuees from northern communities facing the threat of wildfires like Thompson, St. Theresa Point, and Wasagamack.
What’s going on:
Over 1,300 evacuees are already staying in shelters across the city
Space is now ready for up to 7,000 more if needed
People with health concerns are being flown out first
With hotel space running low, folks are encouraged to stay with family or friends if they can
One moment that stood out? Premier Wab Kinew was there at the Convention Centre, helping set up cots himself, quietly, shoulder-to-shoulder with volunteers.
It wasn’t for show. Just a real reminder that leadership sometimes looks like simply lending a hand.
And if you’re wondering how you can support evacuees, there are plenty of ways to get involved.
