RRC Polytech To Take Over MITT Programs This Fall

Source: Square Yards Canada

There’s an important update for students across Winnipeg, especially those planning their next steps.

Starting this fall, 19 programs from MITT will continue under RRC Polytech, as the institute begins to wind down operations.

The goal is to make sure students can continue their studies without disruption, while still supporting Manitoba’s need for skilled workers.

Here are some of the programs that will continue:

  • Cybersecurity and Network Systems

  • Early Childhood Education

  • Culinary Arts

  • Electrical programs

  • Hairstyling and Health Care Aide

  • Welding and Carpentry

  • Automotive Service Technician

  • Medical Assistant and Pharmacy Technician

  • And multiple more

Most programs will still be offered at the South Winnipeg campus, with additional learning continuing in places like St. Vital, St. Norbert, and Portage la Prairie.

There’s also an information night on May 7 from 4 to 7 PM where future students can learn about the programs, ask questions, and explore their options.

So if you’re considering a program, or know someone who is, this is a good time to take a closer look.

City Begins Ground Squirrel Program At Winnipeg Parks

Source: Medicine River Wildlife Centre

If you spend time at local parks, you might start noticing some changes this week.

The City of Winnipeg has started its 2026 ground squirrel management program after ongoing damage to parks and sports fields across the city.

While ground squirrels are a familiar part of local green spaces, their burrowing has created holes that can damage fields and pose safety risks for people using them.

To help manage this, treatments will take place at nine parks, including St. James Memorial Sports Park, Weston Memorial Community Centre, and Woodsworth Park.

They’ve also put steps in place to reduce impact, such as:

  • Daily monitoring of treatment areas

  • Signage posted before and after treatments

  • Work handled by licensed professionals only

The city says the focus is on keeping parks safe and usable, especially for kids, families, and community sports.

Even though it’s not an easy decision, it’s one meant to protect the spaces so many people use every day.

8 Things Only Locals Would Know About Winnipeg

You know you're from Winnipeg when the snow comes back in April and you don't even flinch.

That's just how it goes here. And honestly, we kind of love it. So we put together a list of things that just make sense if you've lived here long enough.

Here are a few that stood out:

  • Winter always comes back at least once, right when you think it’s over

  • Saturday mornings at St. Norbert Farmers’ Market is a Saturday well spent

  • Honey-dill with chicken fingers is not optional here

Plus a few more that every local will nod along to.

It's not the big stuff that makes Winnipeg feel like home. It's the routines, the go-to spots, and the little habits that seem simple but are part of what makes this city ours.

And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.

City Updates

150 Affordable Homes Coming to St. James Area

More housing is on the way in west Winnipeg, and this is one of the bigger projects we've seen in a while.

Construction has started on a 150-unit development along Portage Avenue in St. James.

Owned and developed by Shoal Lake 40 First Nation in partnership with Paragon Living, with support from all three levels of government.

It comes at a time when finding affordable housing has been a real challenge for a lot of people across the city, and this one is meant to help ease some of that pressure.

Here’s what to know:

  • 150 new homes with a mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units

  • More than 40% will be offered at affordable rates for at least 20 years

  • Located between Ronald and Harcourt streets in St. James

Beyond the housing itself, this project also reflects a meaningful step forward, with Indigenous leadership helping shape new housing in the city while creating long-term benefits for the community.

For a lot of people, this simply means more chances to find a place to settle and feel at home in Winnipeg.
