What a Game, What a Season

Source: NHLJets on X

What a game to end it on. Saturday night’s loss to Dallas officially closed the chapter on our playoff run, but let’s be honest, the Jets gave it everything they had.

We pushed hard, played with heart, and came just one goal short in overtime. But what stood out the most wasn’t the final score.

It was the courage of Mark Scheifele. Just hours after learning his dad, Brad, had passed away, he still suited up. Not only that, he scored our only goal of the night. You could tell it meant something more. That goal wasn’t just for the scoreboard. It was for his dad.

Here’s how it played out:

  • Mark scored the opening goal, putting us up 1–0 in the second

  • Dallas tied it in the same period, and both teams held on through a tense third

  • In overtime, Dallas scored on a power play after a last-second penalty

Even with the heartbreak, you could feel the pride. We had grit, unity, and a team this city can stand behind.

Now we’ll be quietly cheering for Dallas to go all the way. If we had to lose, let it be to the future champs.

$175,000 Raised Through Whiteout Parties

Source: United Way Winnipeg

The Jets gave us an incredible run this season, one that brought the whole city together and had us all believing. And while they battled on the ice, we showed up off the ice in a big way.

Through the Whiteout Street Parties and the incredible turnout from fans night after night, $175,000 was raised through United Way Winnipeg to support people in our community who need it most.

That money will now help provide support for:

  • Mental health services

  • Addiction recovery programs

  • And people experiencing homelessness

So even though we didn’t bring home the Cup, we brought hope to hundreds of people in our own backyard.

Huge thanks to the Jets, True North, and every fan who came out and helped make it happen. That’s what Winnipeg pride looks like.

Help Us Find Our Next Trusted Local Partner

If you’ve been reading Winnipeg Digest for a while, you already know we’re really careful about who we work with.

We’ve turned down ads from nightclubs, casinos, and other places that just didn’t feel like the right fit. Because we only want to share things that genuinely add value to your life, not just take up space.

That’s why most of the businesses we work with are long-term partners. When someone comes on board, they become our exclusive advertiser in that industry. We won’t work with anyone else in their space.

And right now, we’re looking to bring on a few more trusted businesses, especially in:

  • Home services like HVAC, roofing, plumbing, electrical, and so on.

  • Wellness and care, like dental offices, physiotherapy clinics, massage therapy, or mental health services

So if you know someone with a local business who wants more clients, whether it’s yours, your husband’s, or a friend’s, just reply to this email or reach out to [email protected].

If they end up coming on board, we’ll give them one free ad slot in the newsletter as a thank-you for the referral.

Let’s keep building up the local businesses that make Winnipeg better.

Restaurant of the Week: CAFE NUL

A New Korean Café Just Opened on Sargent

If you’ve been looking for a new and unique spot to visit in the city, this one’s for you.

Café Nul just opened on Sargent, and between the house-made pastries and the dreamy drinks, it might be one of the most aesthetic cafés in the city.

They’re in their soft opening phase with hours from 4 to 9 PM, and the grand opening is set for May 24 at 12 PM.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Fresh-baked goods made in-house, like mini cakes, cream puffs, and flaky croissants!

  • A full drink menu with coffee, teas, matcha and non-caffeinated options.

  • Our personal favourite: The iced strawberry matcha

It’s perfect for a casual coffee, a cute date, or just finding your new go-to café.
Address: 794 Sargent Ave, Winnipeg, MB

And don’t forget to follow us while you’re at it!

City Updates

Measles Update: New Exposure Sites in Winnipeg

We’re continuing to share updates as they come in, so anyone who may have been exposed can take the right steps and stay safe.

Public health officials have identified two new measles exposure sites in Winnipeg. If you were at either of these spots on May 11 and haven’t been contacted directly, you’re asked to call Health Links-Info Santé at 204-788-8200 in Winnipeg or 1-888-315-9257 toll-free in Manitoba.

Exposure sites and times:

  • Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra at CCFM (340 Provencher Blvd.)
    May 11, 12:50 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

  • Dave and LaVerne’s Modern Diner (15 Lakewood Dr.)
    May 11, 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

If symptoms show up, isolate and contact your health-care provider before visiting in person. And if you or someone in your home isn’t vaccinated, it’s a good time to check in with your doctor.

New Grade 9 Math Course to Include Financial Literacy

If you've ever thought, "I wish they taught us how to budget in school," good news — that’s exactly what’s coming for Manitoba students. And let’s be honest, this has been needed for a long time. So better late than never… but we’re finally glad this is something future generations can actually use.

The province is rolling out a new full-year Grade 9 math curriculum that not only gives students more time with their teachers but also teaches real-life skills like budgeting and saving. It’s all about helping kids feel more confident in both academics and adulthood.

Here’s what’s coming:

  • Financial literacy will be built into the course

  • Replaces the current curriculum and optional transitional course

  • Designed to support success in subjects like pre-calculus, chemistry, and physics

  • Pilot starts in 2026 with full rollout across Manitoba by 2027

  • An extra $65,000 will go toward teacher resources for Grades 4 to 10

This shift is part of the province’s bigger promise to improve student outcomes and give kids the tools they’ll actually use later in life.

New ASL Interpretation Program Launches at RRC Polytech

Staying on the topic of education and inclusion, here’s something else worth celebrating.

RRC Polytech is launching a new American Sign Language – English Interpretation program, and the Manitoba government is helping make it happen. With more Deaf and hard-of-hearing Manitobans needing access to services, this program is a big step forward.

Here’s what’s included:

  • A three-year full-time diploma focused on ASL fluency, Deaf history, and hands-on interpreting

  • $225,000 in renovations and equipment, plus $190,000 annually from the province to support it

  • Real-world training with practicums, simulations, and community involvement

  • And new ASL continuing education courses to help more students qualify

The first class starts in fall 2025, and the program will train interpreters to work in schools, businesses, social services, and more!

It’s the kind of long-term investment that makes our city more accessible, more inclusive, and more connected for everyone.

Manito Ahbee Celebrates 20 Years with $395K Support

With the festival wrapping up this past weekend, it’s hard not to feel proud of what Manito Ahbee has become.

For 20 years, this celebration has brought people together to honour Indigenous culture through music, dance, fashion, and community. And this year, the Manitoba government pitched in $395,000 to help make it even more special.

Here’s what made this year shine:

  • A new Red Road Runway showcasing Indigenous designers and wearable art

  • The second largest powwow in North America, held over two days

  • A weekend full of connection, tradition, and storytelling

Hats off to everyone who made it happen. From the organizers to the dancers to the guests, it’s festivals like these that make Winnipeg feel like home.

Caterpillar Spraying Starts in Winnipeg Tomorrow

Source: City of Winnipeg

If you’ve spotted those sticky little caterpillars crawling around again, you’re not alone. The City is officially kicking off its annual tree pest control program this Tuesday night, and crews will be out on weekday evenings for the next few weeks (weather permitting).

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Spraying starts in Crescent Park, Point Road, Wildwood, and Rockwood

  • The City is using Btk, an organic product that only affects caterpillars

  • They’ll be spraying boulevards, parks, and cemeteries where caterpillars are defoliating trees

  • You can request a buffer zone near your home if you don’t want spraying nearby

  • Sign up for daily spray notifications through 311 or the City website

It’s all about keeping our trees healthy and our summer a little less buggy.
