Winnipeg Lifts City-Wide Fire Ban

Midweek check-in, Winnipeg!

It’s been cold again lately, with that extra layer kind of weather sticking around longer than most of us hoped. But finally, the sun is expected to come out later this week, and it’s shaping up to be the perfect time to actually enjoy the summer.

With the city-wide fire ban now lifted, you can even plan a little bonfire with friends or family. Just don’t forget the marshmallows.

There are a bunch of free markets and community events happening too, so it doesn’t have to cost you a thing to make the most of the warmer days ahead.

We’ve added multiple new events to the list this morning, so be sure to scroll through and see what’s new. And as always, we’ll send you the full rundown of weekend events first thing Friday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Ban Lifted (Backyard Fires Are Back)

Even though it was the right call for safety, let’s be honest. When the fire ban came in earlier this month, a lot of us felt a little bummed. No backyard fires. No s’mores. And no late-night bonfire chats with friends.

With that being such a core part of summer in Winnipeg. We were all sad. But there’s finally good news. The fire ban has officially been lifted as of May 19.

That means:

  • Backyard fire pits are back

  • Fireworks are allowed again

  • City park fire pits are open

  • And solid fuel-burning appliances are good to go

Just be sure to follow the by-law rules and always have water close by. The smoky air should only come from your hot dogs, not a fire gone wrong.

Know a Local Writer Who Deserves the Spotlight?

Winnipeg’s writing scene has always been something special. Whether it’s poems written at The Forks or novels started in a cozy café, our city is full of stories just waiting to be shared.

And now, our city wants to help those stories come to life.

The Winnipeg Public Library is now accepting applications for its 2025 to 2026 Writer-in-Residence program. It’s a paid opportunity that gives one local writer time to focus on their craft while also mentoring emerging Manitoba storytellers.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Term runs from October 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026

  • Includes dedicated time for your own writing project

  • While mentoring emerging Manitoba writers through workshops, one-on-one consults, and a writing circle

  • Deadline to apply is June 4, 2025

So if you or someone you know has a story to tell and a heart for helping others tell theirs, this could be the perfect opportunity. It’s not just about writing, it’s about building up our local community of storytellers!

It’s all happening May 24 and 25, with over 40 historic sites across the city opening their doors. From old banks and fire halls to walking tours through neighbourhoods you thought you knew, it’s a chance to see Winnipeg in a whole new way.

This might be your last chance to snag a spot for the ones that need registration.

A New Community Kitchen Making a Big Difference

Not every community has easy access to healthy meals, safe spaces, or places where people truly feel seen. But in the heart of the North End, that’s starting to change. One kitchen at a time.

The Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre just got a full kitchen makeover, and it’s more than just a nice upgrade. Thanks to a $1.8 million investment from the City and Province, this space will now help feed local kids, support after-school programs, and bring neighbours together around food, culture, and care.

The kitchen will be used to:

  • Prepare healthy snacks for the City’s Priceless Fun programs

  • Support local groups like Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata, Winnipeg School Division, and Graffiti Arts Programming

  • Give families and youth a safe, welcoming place to connect and be nourished

It’s a small thing on paper, but in real life, it means more full bellies, more smiles, and more community.

$1.6M Project Aims to Improve Food Access in Indigenous Communities

Staying on the topic of food and community, another meaningful step is being taken to help families across Manitoba get better access to healthy meals.

RRC Polytech’s Prairie Research Kitchen, the University of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Métis Federation have come together on a new project focused on food security in rural and remote Indigenous communities.

Where they work with local partners to create affordable, nutritious, and culturally relevant food options. They’ll also be offering training, creating jobs for students, and supporting long-term solutions that help families grow, cook, and access the food they need.

The project is backed by $1.6 million in funding, including support from Protein Industries Canada.

Manitoba Gives Grants to Museums Across the Province

Museums aren’t just places to look at old stuff. They’re where our stories live. Whether it’s a school trip to a local gallery or learning about Indigenous history through powerful exhibits, these spaces help us understand where we’ve been—and where we’re going.

And this week, the province is making sure those stories keep being told. The Manitoba government is putting $315,000 toward 34 museums through the Community Museum Project Support Program, just in time for International Museum Day.

Here’s what that support looks like:

  • Funding up to $25,000 per museum for special projects

  • Help for museums working on reconciliation, equity, and cultural preservation

  • With over 100 museums also getting increases to their yearly operating grants

So if you know someone who’s involved with a local museum, or you’ve always wanted to help keep Manitoba’s stories alive, now’s a great time to share this.
