Downtown Winnipeg Is Losing One Of Its Last Grocery Stores
If you live downtown and don't drive, getting groceries is already a bit of a hassle. And it's about to get harder.
Giant Tiger has announced that its store at Donald Street and Ellice Avenue will close on November 7.
A lot of people in the area shop there because they can walk to it. It's close, it's cheap, and you can fill a cart without spending a fortune. Once it's gone, a quick trip for milk means a bus ride or a cab.
Here's what to know:
Last day is November 7
Giant Tiger says the decision came after a careful review of the location
The company says it's supporting staff who work there
Until then, it's open as usual and fully stocked
So there's still time. If this has been your store, the next few months are a good reason to keep shopping it, grab your usuals, and say thanks to the folks behind the till while the walk is still short.

Together with Paris Cosmetology!

Beauty Treatments You Didn't Know Winnipeg Had
"Are you getting enough sleep?"
You were. Eight hours. That's the annoying part.
You brushed it off at the time. Then you caught yourself looking a bit longer in the mirror the next morning. And the one after that.
That's how these things work. Somebody says one thing and suddenly you notice it every day. The tired look. Hair that's thinner than it was. Skin that's gone a little dull.
You've been meaning to ask someone about it for months. You haven't.
Paris Cosmetology is who you ask.
Their Winnipeg clinic has board-certified doctors, registered nurses and experienced medical aestheticians. You come in, say what's been bugging you, and they tell you what would actually help.
A few of the things they do:
Botox and fillers for soft, natural-looking results
PRP therapy and hair restoration for thinning hair
Laser and microneedling for skin tone and texture
Targeted treatments for dark circles, puffiness and fine lines
That's a few off a much longer list of services.
And you don't need to know what you want before you go. That's what the consult is for. You bring the thing that's been on your mind. They figure out the rest.
The rest of the list is one tap away.

Restaurant of the Week:
House of MA Kitchen + Bar

That stretch of Bannatyne has quietly turned into one of the best food blocks in the city. It just added something Winnipeg didn't have.
House of MA Kitchen + Bar opened next to Kevin's in the Exchange, and instead of picking one cuisine, they run five. Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Filipino, and Vietnamese, all on one menu, all built to share.
Every meal starts with complimentary broth. It's how they set up the rest of the night, and it's a nice touch you don't see much around here.
And if the menu wasn't enough, the room holds up its end too. Warm wood, bamboo woven into the walls, marble catching the light. It doesn't feel like anywhere else in the city.
A few things to know:
Five cuisines on one menu, all modern takes on the classics
Complimentary broth to start every meal
Full craft cocktail bar, and the lavender cocktail is the move
Sharing plates, so bring a few people and order wide
We're still thinking about the karaage, the honey walnut shrimp, and the Turon pudding at the end. The rest you'll have to try yourself, and we'd go soon, because a new spot like this fills up fast.

Thousands Of Manitobans Are Finally Getting Their Power Back

Source: Manitoba Hydro
Wednesday's storm was one of those ones you'll be talking about for a while.
Strong winds and thousands of lightning strikes moved across the province, knocking out power for more than 30,000 customers and bringing down trees and lines across Winnipeg and the surrounding communities.
Manitoba Hydro crews have been at it around the clock since, and most of the city is back to normal.
Here's where things stand:
By Friday, outages were down to about 350 outages, affecting roughly 4,500 customers
As of August 2, that's around 40 outages and fewer than 100 customers
Crews are prioritizing the repairs that bring the most people back online at once
Some jobs are slower because fallen trees have to be cleared before anyone can reach the damaged lines
If your power is still out, don't wait it out. Reporting the outage helps crews know exactly where to go next. And if you're wondering when your neighbourhood is getting power back, the outage map is the quickest way to check the latest progress.
Province Orders Mosquito Fogging Over West Nile Risk
The mosquitoes have been rough this year. This week, the trucks are out for a different reason than usual.
The province has ordered targeted fogging after crews found high numbers of Culex tarsalis, the mosquito species that can carry West Nile virus. It also lands during the stretch when the risk is highest here, mid-July through mid-August.
So this round isn't about making the backyard more comfortable. It's about keeping the risk down.
Here's what you should know:
Fogging runs through Tuesday, weather permitting
Spraying happens between 9:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
Areas include Whyte Ridge, Waverley West, Bridgwater, Amber Trails, The Maples, Tyndall Park, and nearby neighbourhoods
Buffer zones don't apply during a provincially ordered program
The City posts each evening's treatment areas at least eight hours ahead
The schedule can still shift if the weather doesn't cooperate.
If you're in one of those neighbourhoods, worth a quick check before you make evening plans this week.

RRC Polytech Students Are Getting $1.2 Million In New Equipment
There's a big difference between learning something in a classroom and doing it for real.
The best mechanics, welders, and technicians don't learn from textbooks. They learn with their hands on the same tools they'll be using the day after they graduate.
That just got a lot easier at RRC Polytech. Manitoba Public Insurance has donated $1.2 million in collision repair equipment to the Notre Dame Campus, where more than 400 transportation trades students train every year.
Here's what they'll be working with:
Advanced frame repair and welding equipment
Tire-changing and balancing machines
Plastic repair technology that teaches repair-first techniques
Modern tools used across today's collision repair shops
Every student wants to walk into their first day on the job feeling ready. This is the kind of thing that makes that happen, and it means more skilled tradespeople staying and working right here in Manitoba.
