Winnipeg Police Issue a New Credit Card Scam Warning
Nobody likes to imagine it, but scams are finding new ways to trick people every day. The latest one has already cost some Winnipeggers money, and Winnipeg Police are asking everyone to be on alert.
It’s a reminder that these schemes can catch anyone off guard, which is why sharing the details matters.
Here’s how the scam works:
Scammers pose as your bank and claim your card has been compromised
They tell you to cut up the card, but leave the chip untouched
A courier is arranged to pick up the envelope with the card pieces
And then the chip is used to steal funds, make purchases, or even recreate the card
Police are urging everyone to remember a simple rule: just hang up.
Call your bank yourself using the number on the back of your card, not any number the caller provides. And remember: banks will never send someone to your door to collect your card.
This is one of those warnings that’s worth passing on. We’ve all got friends, parents, or grandparents who might not think twice about following these instructions, and that’s what the scammers are counting on.

Free Pet Vaccination Clinic Happening in Winnipeg This Sunday

Source: Winnipeg Transit
Vet bills can add up quickly, and for many families that makes it tough to keep pets up to date on their care. This weekend, a free walk-in clinic is offering a cost-effective way to make sure every cat and dog stays healthy and safe.
Here’s what’s included:
Free rabies, distemper, and parvo shots for cats and dogs,
Basic health exams plus flea and ear mite treatments for cats,
Pet food support available while supplies last.
The clinic takes place Sunday, September 28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Valour Community Centre, 448 Burnell Street. It’s being run by the Winnipeg Humane Society, Feed the Furbabies Canada, and Veterinarians Without Borders.
Last year, more than 300 animals were vaccinated, and organizers expect another strong turnout. For families with a new puppy or neighbours caring for a senior cat, this clinic makes it easier to give pets the love and care they deserve without worrying about the cost.

Winnipeg Transit Plans Later Evening Bus Service After Rider Concerns

Source: Winnipeg Transit
There’s something comforting about knowing the bus will still be there when your shift runs late or a night with friends stretches longer than planned. For a lot of Winnipeggers, that hasn’t always been the case, but change is finally on the way.
The city has confirmed that later evening service is being planned for 2026 as part of the upcoming budget, with a proposal heading to council this November. The goal is to support shift workers, students, and late-night commuters who depend on reliable service after dark.
Better evening service means fewer long walks, fewer missed shifts, and more peace of mind when the day runs late.
City Updates
New 4.5 Kilometre Multiuse Path Opens in Northwest Winnipeg

Source: Trails Manitoba
For years, getting across the rail tracks in the northwest has been a hassle for cyclists and pedestrians. Now, a new multi-use path is making that daily trip safer and more connected for everyone in the community.
Here’s what’s new:
A 4.5 km route running from Water Ridge Path and Dr. Jose Rizal Way down to Gallagher Avenue W
A safe railway crossing so cyclists and walkers don’t have to take long detours
Upgrades along the way, including new lighting and 250 metres of off-street paths near Billy Mosienko Arena and Shaughnessy Park School
And lastly, new pedestrian signals at Keewatin and Tyndall, with another coming to Manitoba Avenue later this year
For families, kids walking to school, and anyone who prefers biking to driving, it’s one more step toward a city that feels safer and more connected.

Winnipeg author Ariel Gordon, who has published seven books, has been named the Winnipeg Public Library’s Writer-in-Residence for 2025–26.
What her role means for local writers:
Free one-on-one consultations for Manitoba writers of any genre
Workshops and mentorship to help with both writing and the writing life
Ariel has been part of Winnipeg’s writing community since she was nineteen. She remembers how past Writers-in-Residence helped her find her own path, and now she has the chance to do the same. Whether it is a poet just starting out, someone working on a first novel, or a writer looking for encouragement to keep going, she will be there to help.
Her eight-month term runs from October to April, giving her time to guide others while also working on her own projects, including a new non-fiction book set to publish in 2026.
This residency is as much about community as it is about books. For Winnipeg, it is a reminder that the stories written here matter and deserve to be celebrated.
