Manitoba Launches New Campaign to Protect Seniors from Scam Calls

Source: Winnipeg Police Service
It’s heartbreaking to think about someone’s parent or grandparent picking up the phone and losing their life savings in a matter of minutes.
It can happen to anyone, and after a rise in grandparent and emergency scams…
The Manitoba government and Winnipeg Police Service have launched a new anti-fraud campaign called Just Hang Up, focused on protecting older adults from phone scams.
According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Manitobans aged 60 and older reported losing nearly $350,000 in 2024 to these types of scams alone.
But this campaign is here to stop that by giving older adults the tools and confidence to shut a scam down before money is lost.
Here’s what the campaign includes:
A simple message: Pause. Hang up. Verify. Report.
A new online resource hub
City-wide ads and public awareness messaging
In-person presentations delivered with A and O Support Services for Older Adults, aiming to reach more than 700 people over six months
Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, sometimes even using artificial intelligence to sound like a loved one in distress. That’s why knowing when to pause and simply hang up can make all the difference.
So be sure to click the link below and share this with all the seniors in your life, from friends, to parents and even grandparents, so they don’t ever get caught by any scams like this.

Winnipeg Digest Dinner Club Is Coming Back Next Month
Meeting new people as adults can feel harder than it should. And trying that new restaurant you saved on Instagram? Somehow it always turns into “maybe next week.”
Dinner Club makes it easy.
On March 18, 2026, we’re bringing people together across multiple restaurants in the Exchange District for another night of good food and even better conversation.
Here’s how it works. You take a short quiz. We match you with five others who share similar interests. Then you show up, sit down, and let the night unfold naturally.
Tables are split across different local spots, so you’re discovering somewhere new while supporting Winnipeg restaurants midweek.
Here’s what makes it different:
Curated groups of six
Multiple Exchange District restaurants
Relaxed, low-pressure conversation
Optional bar meetup after dinner
If you’ve been meaning to expand your circle and shake up your routine a little, this is a simple way to do it. Seats always go quickly, so don’t wait too long.

Province Expands Program to Tackle Loneliness Among Seniors
Loneliness is more than just a quiet house or an empty calendar. It’s a serious health concern that can affect both mental and physical well-being.
Research shows ongoing isolation can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression and even dementia, especially among older adults.
But to help with that, the province has expanded its social prescribing program across all five regional health authorities. The goal is simple: connect seniors and other Manitobans to community supports that reduce loneliness and strengthen overall health.
Instead of only treating medical symptoms, health-care providers can now refer patients to local, non-medical programs that bring people together.
Here’s what that can include:
Weekly lunch programs, walking groups, board game nights and creative classes
Support accessing food programs, transportation and practical services
And help from more than 120 resource co-ordinators across Manitoba
This is a meaningful step in the right direction.
Recognizing that loneliness is a real health risk and responding to it means more Manitobans can stay connected, supported, and healthier where they live.

City Updates
City Begins Snow Clearing Operations After Monday Night Storm

Source: City of Winnipeg
After Monday night’s snow and blowing winds, crews are out across Winnipeg working to clear routes and clean up drifting.
The city says about five centimetres of snow fell, but strong winds caused localized drifting in open areas, leaving some streets more snow covered than others.
Here’s what to know:
Main routes are being cleared first
Sidewalks and pathways are being re-plowed based on priority
Back lane plowing begins today at 7 a.m.
Crews are reminding drivers to use caution around heavy equipment and adjust to road conditions as work continues.
If you’re heading out, click the link below to check the live snow clearing map and see when your street is scheduled for plowing.

IMPORTANT: Residential Parking Ban Begins Thursday Morning
As crews move from main routes into neighbourhoods, residential streets are next.
A residential parking ban will be in effect from Thursday at 7 a.m. until Saturday at 7 p.m. to allow snow and ice removal across Winnipeg.
Here’s how it will roll out by zone:
Thursday (7 a.m.–7 p.m.): D, G, H, P, S
Thursday night: E, F, J, K, L, N, R, T
Friday (7 a.m.–7 p.m.): B, I, M, O, Q, U
Friday night: A, V
Saturday (7 a.m.–7 p.m.): C
During the residential ban, the winter route parking ban will be suspended, meaning drivers can park overnight on designated winter routes Thursday and Friday.
Vehicles parked in violation during their zone’s clearing window could receive a $200 ticket and be towed.
So before you park, click the link below to double-check which zone you’re in and when your area is scheduled for clearing.

Province Invests $100K in New Playground for École Springfield Heights

Source: Winnipeg Architecture Foundation
Good news for families in North Kildonan!
The Manitoba government is investing $100,000 toward a new inclusive playground at École Springfield Heights School, replacing an aging structure that recently closed due to safety concerns.
Here’s what this funding will support:
A new inclusive play structure designed for accessibility
A safe and modern outdoor space for students
A shared gathering space connecting the school and North Kildonan Community Centre
Playgrounds are more than just equipment. They’re where kids build friendships, stay active, and create memories after the school bell rings.
This investment helps ensure children in the neighbourhood have a safe place to play and families have a welcoming community space for years to come.
