Happy Friday, Winnipeg!
Hope you’re enjoying this warm November stretch. It feels a little strange walking around without full winter jackets, especially since this time last year we were already buried in snow.
Today, we’re bringing back the Homes of the Week section. But this time it’s got a new twist, a cleaner layout, and clearer price ranges, so it’s easier to browse.
Be sure to check it out and share your feedback in the poll below. Your input will shape how this section looks moving forward.

Winnipeg Animal Services Rescues 70+ Birds in Starving Conditions

Source: Winnipeg Animal Services
It’s been an emotional week for Winnipeg Animal Services, after rescuing over 70 neglected birds found in heartbreaking conditions inside a city home.
Many were found after going far too long without food. Some didn’t survive. And the ones who did were severely underweight, exhausted, and in need of immediate care.
Staff spent eight straight hours tending to every bird, making sure each one received:
A clean, safe place to rest
Fresh food and clean drinking water
And a full health check from veterinarians
The small bright spot in all this is that none of the birds are showing signs of transmissible diseases, but they’ll still need time and steady care to regain their strength.
Today, Animal Services is caring for 43 recovering birds, which is far more than their space is designed to handle. If you’ve been looking for a way to help, this is one of those moments where our city can come together.
Here’s how you can support them:
Donate new or gently used bird cages (clean, secure, and in good working order)
Volunteers to assist with daily care as staff manage an unexpected number of animals
And lastly, share this news to help spread the word
This situation is truly sad to see, and every bit of support helps these birds get a second chance. Click the link below to see how you can help, whether it’s with supplies or by volunteering your time. Every little bit helps!

Road Closures for Tomorrow’s Manitoba Hydro Santa Parade

Source: Manitoba Hydro Santa Parade
The Santa Claus Parade is happening tomorrow, and downtown is getting ready to help kick off the holiday season. If you’re heading out, it helps to know which streets will be closed so the evening goes smoothly.
Here’s what closes and when:
Main Street (southbound) – closed from Portage to York starting 11 a.m.
Portage Avenue – closed from Main to Memorial starting 2 p.m.
Memorial Boulevard – closed around Portage and Broadway at 2 p.m.
Route 62 (southbound) – also closes at 2 p.m.
Once the streets are cleared, the parade will roll through at 5 p.m., moving from Main and Portage toward Memorial Boulevard.
Even with the closures, it’s always a special night downtown: kids bundled up, lights glowing down Portage, and families finding their favourite spot along the route.
It’s one of those evenings where the whole city feels a little brighter. Bundle up, grab a warm drink, and enjoy the magic!
Stunning Aurora Time-lapse Captured by Winnipeg Photographer

Source: Anthony Urso
As mentioned in our last edition, Manitoba skies were glowing earlier this week with bright green, purple, and pink northern lights. A lot of people weren’t able to catch them in person, so we wanted to share the next best thing.
Local photographer Anthony Urso went out and captured a stunning aurora time-lapse: clear lights rolling across the sky, colours shifting gently, and that quiet Manitoba glow that always feels a little unreal. He filmed just north of the city, where the sky opened up and the lights really came alive.
It’s one of those videos you end up watching more than once. And even if you missed the show, this captures the feeling perfectly: calm, bright, and a little bit magical.
City Updates
Winnipeg Transit Cracks Down on Nearly 5,000 Fare Evaders
Winnipeg Transit’s expanded fare enforcement is showing results, with nearly 5,000 rides denied to fare evaders since September.
Here’s what’s happened so far:
6,800+ fare checks completed by Transit Inspectors
4,944 denied rides and 931 warnings issued
359 riders paid after being asked
Another 2,670 people walked away before paying
Winnipeg Transit estimates it loses $7–10 million each year to fare evasion, a figure the city says it’s working hard to reduce.
Mayor Scott Gillingham says enforcement helps keep the system fair for paying riders and funds future service improvements.
To make bus travel safer and easier for everyone, Winnipeg Transit is also rolling out a few other changes:
A fare education campaign launching soon — with ads reminding riders to have fares ready before boarding
A tap-to-pay system coming next year, allowing payments by phone, debit, or credit
More safety patrols — inspectors, Transit Safety Officers, and Winnipeg Police will continue monitoring buses, shelters, and stops
It’s a big push to make riding the bus feel fair and safe for everyone, especially for folks who rely on it every day. More eyes on the system means fewer conflicts for drivers, clearer expectations for riders, and a transit experience that feels better for the whole city.
