Extreme Cold Safety Reminders for Winnipeg This Weekend

Source: City of Winnipeg

Yesterday felt like -48 °C, which is cold even by Winnipeg standards. Weather like this changes how we move through the day and makes it a good time to slow down and look out for one another.

If you can, take a moment to check in on the people around you. A quick call to a parent, a text to a neighbour, or making sure kids are bundled properly before heading out can really matter when temperatures dip this low.

If you do need to be outside, here are a few simple things to keep in mind:

  • Dress in layers and cover all exposed skin, even for short trips outside

  • Limit time outdoors and warm up often when you come back inside

  • Make sure your home heating is working safely and properly

  • Watch for warning signs like numbness, confusion, or intense shivering

If you want a quick refresher on how extreme cold affects the body and what to watch for, you can find the official Manitoba guide below.

And it’s not just people who feel this cold. Pets feel it fast too, especially when temperatures drop suddenly.

Here are a few small adjustments to help keep them comfortable:

  • Keep walks short during extreme cold

  • Wipe paws and bellies after being outside

  • Bring pets indoors as much as possible on colder days

If you have a pet at home, click the link below to see more tips on keeping them safe through the winter.

And if you absolutely need to head out this weekend, it never hurts to double check the forecast before leaving. Conditions can change quickly, and a quick look can help you plan better.

7 Cozy Neighbourhood Cafes in Winnipeg to Visit This Winter

With this freezing cold outside, it feels like we all deserve a little reward for leaving the house. That’s exactly why we pulled together a list of local cafes that feel especially welcoming in winter.

These are the kinds of places where you can finally take your mitts off, warm up properly, and support small businesses that keep our neighbourhoods feeling connected, even on the coldest days.

Here are a few from the list that stood out:

  • Little Sister Coffee Maker - Thoughtfully sourced coffee, friendly staff, and multiple locations across the city that make it a reliable winter stop.

  • Cleocatra Café - A vintage-style cafe where great coffee meets rescue cats and a truly cozy atmosphere.

  • Across the Board Game Café - Coffee, comfort food, and shelves of board games. A great pick for families or long winter afternoons.

There are a few more neighbourhood gems on the full list, spread across different parts of the city, each offering a good reason to bundle up and head out.

Jets Pick Up Important Home Win

What a game. On a night where nothing came easy, the Winnipeg Jets did what they needed to do, earning a solid 3–1 win at home over the St. Louis Blues.

It wasn’t flashy, but it was steady. The Jets jumped out early and stayed composed when the game tightened up.

A few moments that made the difference:

  • Two first-period power play goals set the tone

  • Mark Scheifele finished with two goals and an assist

  • Josh Morrissey added a goal in a three-point night

  • Eric Comrie stayed calm in net when pressure picked up

With the standings this close, wins like this matter. This one nudged the Jets ahead of the Blues and kept the playoff picture very much alive.

As we’re writing this, the Jets are gearing up to face the Florida Panthers, another tough test and another chance to build momentum.

If you’ve been following along this week, click below to see how that matchup turned out.

Last Call to Join Winnipeg’s First Ever Dinner Club

Our Winnipeg Digest Dinner Club has been filling tables quickly, and sign ups for the upcoming dinners close on Monday, Jan 26.

If you’ve been meaning to join but haven’t taken the quiz yet, this is one of your last chances to grab a seat.

The idea is simple and very Winnipeg:

  • Small dinner tables at local restaurants

  • Six people, thoughtfully matched

  • Easy conversation, good food, and a low-pressure way to meet new friends

We host these dinners on Wednesday nights to support local restaurants on a quieter evening. After dinner, there’s also an optional bar meetup, where guests from all tables can hang out and keep the night going.

Nothing awkward. No forced networking. Just a relaxed night out with people you might not have met otherwise.

If this sounds like something you’d enjoy, don’t wait too long. We need time to finalize groups and book tables with the restaurants hosting us.
