City of Winnipeg to Use Sulphur Gas in 8 Parks

If you’ve ever walked through a park and smiled at a little squirrel popping out of a hole, you’re not alone. But those same holes have led to sprained ankles, tripping hazards, injured pets, and have even caused people to stop using some parks altogether.

So, as reported by CBC News, the City is making a difficult call: starting May 20, they’ll be using sulphur gas to reduce ground squirrel populations in some of our busiest parks. The goal is to keep parks safe and usable for summer sports, families, and your dog’s zoomies.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The gas (sulphur-based) will be dropped into the burrows to target the ground squirrels

  • Then, the holes will be filled with sand to prevent escape and reduce tripping hazards

  • The city says this is about public safety, not just pest control

  • In the past, poison was used, but it was too risky for other animals

  • Meanwhile, animal groups are urging the city to consider more humane, non-lethal options

  • And long-term, the city says it's actively exploring better solutions

It’s not an easy choice, and no one’s cheering for it. But at the heart of it all is a simple hope: that more families, kids, and neighbours can safely enjoy the parks we all share.

Note: Read the article linked above to see which 8 parks will be affected.

Jets Win Game 2 to Take 2-0 Series Lead

Source: Winnipeg Jets

What a night. If you were anywhere near downtown on Monday, you probably felt it. The noise, the energy, the towels flying. When Kyle Connor scored that go-ahead goal in the third, the whole city lit up. The Jets took Game 2 with a 2-1 win and now lead the series 2-0!

Just 14 more wins till we bring it home.

Mark Scheifele had a goal and an assist, Connor Hellebuyck made 21 solid saves, and the whole team played with heart. It was tight, it was physical, and it was loud. Everything playoff hockey should be.

The Blues came out strong, but the Jets didn’t flinch. The crowd helped carry them through, and now we head into Game 3 with confidence.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Kyle Connor scored the game-winner for the second straight game

  • Rookie Jimmy Snuggerud tied it late in the first on a power play

  • Hellebuyck was steady all night and shut the door when it counted

Now it’s off to St. Louis for Game 3 on Thursday. The Blues are tough at home, but so are we, and we’ve already beat them there this season. The Jets are playing like a team that believes, and the fans are behind them every step of the way.

If this is what the first two games felt like, just wait until we’re deeper into the run.

Manitoba Invests $2M in Local Climate Change Projects

With Earth Day just behind us, our province is putting its money where its mouth is.

The Manitoba government just announced over $2 million in funding for community-led climate projects. And every bit of it is staying right here in Manitoba.

From EV chargers to home energy upgrades, it’s about building a greener, more resilient future close to home. It’s a reminder that big change can start small, in your neighbourhood, in your home, or with a single project that inspires others to care.

Here’s where the money’s going:

  • $500,000 to install 51 electric vehicle chargers across the province

  • $675,000 for projects that cut emissions in homes, transport, and small businesses

  • $255,000 to help towns like Steinbach, Altona, and Dauphin develop local climate plans

  • $200,000 for the University of Winnipeg’s Prairie Climate Centre, to expand tools like the Climate Atlas of Canada

It’s not just a plan, it’s progress. And it starts in our own backyards!
