Winnipeg Police Returning to Transit This Weekend

Feeling safe on the bus has been a real worry for a lot of Winnipeggers lately.

Whether you're heading to work, dropping the kids at school, or just trying to get across the city, that peace of mind matters.

The good news is the city is doing something about it.

Starting this weekend, you'll see more police officers riding Winnipeg Transit buses and patrolling stops, shelters, and stations.

It's the return of a safety project that ran last fall, and the early numbers are exactly why it's back.

Here's what's happening:

  • A mix of uniformed and plainclothes officers will be on buses and at transit hubs

  • Officers from the new Rapid Response Unit will be part of the rollout

  • Last fall's project brought transit-related violent crime down 18% compared to the same stretch in 2024

For some context, 325 violent crimes were reported at transit locations in 2024, a record high and nearly triple what it was back in 2019.

So seeing that number start to drop is a big deal.

The project leans on prevention more than anything, with officers out in the open to stop problems before they start.

It worked once already, and bringing it back this spring means safer rides for everyone who counts on transit to get through their day.

Restaurant of the Week: Bull & Filly

The North Kildonan Gem Everyone Keeps Talking About

Tucked away on Henderson Highway, Bull & Filly is one of those spots people in North Kildonan are quietly proud of.

Ask around, and you'll hear the same thing over and over: this place is special.

Part of it is the room. It's warm and a little vintage, with a full faux tree standing right in the middle of the dining room, which somehow just works.

The other part is the food. The kitchen is run by chef Tristan Foucault, who brings a rustic French touch to a menu that feels both comforting and a touch fancy.

A few things people can't stop ordering:

  • The Bull Burger, an actual Burger Week winner, loaded with smoked cheddar and candied jalapeno

  • The Mussels & Frites, one of the most popular plates on the menu

  • The French onion soup, made from scratch with real veal stock

  • And the French sirloin, which regulars swear gets cooked just right every time

With a 4.6 rating across 500-plus reviews, it's earned its reputation the honest way, one happy table at a time.

The owner is also known for stopping by tables to say hello, which is the kind of small touch that makes a place feel like home.

If you've been meaning to try somewhere new, this is a good one. Bring a friend, take your time, and enjoy a proper night out close to home.

Free Hepatitis A Vaccines Are Now Available to More Winnipeggers

There's an active hepatitis A outbreak in Manitoba, and the province is responding by expanding access to free vaccines in Winnipeg.

As of this week, free hepatitis A vaccines are being offered to staff and volunteers at community organizations across Winnipeg who work with people experiencing homelessness.

We're talking shelters, outreach programs, and the frontline folks showing up for our neighbours every single day.

First declared in April 2025, the outbreak has seen cases in Winnipeg climbing in recent weeks.

A few things worth knowing:

  • As of May 6, there have been 658 cases province-wide, including 143 in Winnipeg

  • The vaccine can prevent illness even after exposure, if you get it within two weeks

  • It's still free for other at-risk groups, including people who use drugs and those connected to affected First Nations communities

  • You can get it through your doctor, public health offices, and nursing stations

And the simplest tip of all still holds up: washing your hands with soap and water for a good 15 seconds goes a long way in stopping the spread.

It's the kind of small habit we all learned as kids that still does some of the heaviest lifting.

At the end of the day, this is about looking out for the people who need it most, and giving the folks who care for them the protection they deserve.

Manitoba Is Expanding Breast Cancer Screenings Again

For a lot of women in southern Manitoba, getting a mammogram has meant a long drive, time off work, and a full day out of the house.

That kind of barrier makes it easy to put off, and too many women do.

So the province is bringing the service closer. For the first time, breast cancer screening and diagnostic mammography are coming to Portage la Prairie, opening at the new Portage Regional Health Centre in spring 2027.

For people in the region, that means less travelling and earlier detection, which can change everything.

A few things worth knowing:

  • A full mammography suite with new equipment and a trained technologist on site

  • Both routine screening and diagnostic mammograms will be offered

  • Self-referral is already open to women 45 and older, with the age dropping to 40 by end of 2026

None of this happened without a community behind it. The Portage District General Hospital Foundation put up $725,000, with local donors and fundraising groups chipping in to make it real.

Because of them, more women across the region will have access to care that could save their lives.

So if you or someone you love is due for a screening, or booking for the first time, now's a great time to look into what's available near you.

$2.2M Coming to Make Downtown Winnipeg Safer

Downtown Winnipeg is getting $2.2 million for community safety this summer, aimed at making the area feel more welcoming for everyone who lives, works, and spends time there.

The Manitoba government announced the funding last week for community safety programs across downtown and the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Here's what it's going toward:

  • Community outreach teams working directly with people who need support

  • De-escalation and wellness programs focused on connection, not just enforcement

  • Security upgrades like cameras, alarms, and vandalism repairs for local organizations

  • The Community Safety WAYFINDERS program, which works alongside Indigenous-led groups to connect people to services before situations escalate

In total, the money is split across five organizations, with $750,000 each going to the Downtown Community Safety Partnership and the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ, and the rest shared between the West End, Exchange District, and West Broadway BIZ zones.

It's the kind of behind-the-scenes work that doesn't always make headlines, but it adds up. And a safer downtown means more of us out enjoying the patios, the festivals, and the summer nights our city does so well.
